Laffey is a Tier X U.S. destroyer with a highly specialized close-range gunboat playstyle. Her combination of Superheal, toggle Smoke and Burst Fire gives her exceptional survivability, allowing her to take fights that would be extremely dangerous for most destroyers. The trade-off is low speed and relatively limited damage output against larger ships.
The ship is at her best when fighting other destroyers and contesting objectives. Rather than staying at long range and trying to farm battleships, Laffey wants to get close, apply overwhelming pressure to enemy DDs and use her defensive tools to survive the engagement. Once the immediate threat has been removed, she can disengage and choose a new target or position.
Radio Location is particularly useful for this role because it provides additional information about the position of nearby enemy ships. Knowing the approximate direction of an opposing destroyer makes it easier to approach objectives, anticipate engagements and choose when to commit to a close-range fight. Players who want more raw damage can instead choose Fearless Brawler or the skill providing a 5% reduction to main battery reload time.
Laffey's survivability is one of her defining advantages. The Superheal can recover amounts of damage that would leave a conventional destroyer crippled or destroyed, while Smoke gives her a reliable way to break line of sight. This combination allows Laffey to absorb punishment during important engagements and then disengage before the enemy can finish the job.
Her Smoke Generator is best treated as an escape and disengagement tool rather than a permanent farming position. Get close, pressure the enemy, and then use a short puff of smoke to break spotting when you need to disappear. Once you have completed the disengagement, remember to turn the smoke off. Keeping it active unnecessarily wastes its duration and can leave you without the consumable when you actually need it.
Burst Fire adds another layer to Laffey's close-range gameplay. With a 25-second cooldown, it should be used deliberately rather than simply activated whenever it becomes available. It is particularly effective when finishing off a damaged enemy or when you need a sudden burst of firepower while disengaging from a dangerous position.
Once the enemy destroyers have been dealt with, Laffey becomes more flexible. Remaining Smoke charges can be used to farm larger targets, while open-water gunboating can also be effective when the situation allows it. Her goal at this stage is not necessarily to produce enormous damage numbers, but to remain a persistent threat and draw enemy attention away from more vulnerable allied ships.
The commander choice is also worth considering. Laffey does not gain enough from Doe's improved skills to make the commander an obvious priority, while Halsey's talents can be particularly difficult to activate consistently on this ship. Those commanders are generally better reserved for ships where their specialized abilities can be used more reliably.
Laffey has a distinctive playstyle that rewards confident positioning and aggressive decision-making. She can force her way into objective fights, survive punishment that would destroy other destroyers, and then vanish behind a quick smoke screen when the engagement becomes unfavorable. Players who enjoy the Daring-style approach of fighting aggressively at close range will find Laffey particularly rewarding.
Outside of World of Warships, Laffey has a notable real-world connection: the USS Laffey is preserved as a museum ship in Charleston, South Carolina. The historic destroyer provides the name and inspiration for this Tier X U.S. destroyer.
