Destroyer - U.S.A. Tier IX Johnston - Captain & Gunboat Build
- Build focus: A close-range gunboat build designed around Johnston's SAP shells and high-DPM Burst Fire.
- Playstyle: Johnston is a Fletcher-class destroyer that sacrifices torpedo reload speed for stronger gun performance and a unique Burst Fire mode.
- Main battery: Five 127 mm guns have a 4.5-second standard reload and 12.5 km range, while Burst Fire delivers three rapid salvos before entering its reload cycle.
- SAP shells: SAP provides excellent damage against suitable targets, particularly enemy destroyers and lightly armored sections of larger ships.
- Burst Fire: Burst Fire provides higher sustained DPM than standard firing and is the primary damage mode for this gun-focused setup.
- Anti-DD option: Radio Location can replace Fearless Brawler for players who want stronger destroyer-hunting and capture-point capabilities.
- Torpedoes: Johnston retains long-range torpedoes, but their long reload makes them a secondary weapon compared with the main battery.
- Consumables: Smoke Generator provides the concealment needed for close-range gunboat engagements and farming larger ships.
- Applies to: IX Johnston and IX GQ Johnny.
Johnston takes the familiar Fletcher-class destroyer and turns it into a much more aggressive gunboat. The ship trades away some of Fletcher's traditional torpedo utility for SAP ammunition and Burst Fire, creating a main battery that is particularly dangerous when used at close range.
The five 127 mm guns have a 4.5-second standard reload, but the important feature is the alternative Burst Fire mode. It fires three salvos at short intervals before entering a longer reload cycle. Unlike many burst-fire systems where the mechanic is primarily about front-loading damage, Johnston actually benefits from using Burst Fire for sustained damage output.
SAP is the other defining part of the build. With a maximum damage of 2,500 per shell, a well-placed burst against an exposed enemy destroyer can remove a substantial amount of HP in a very short period. The ammunition is particularly effective when the target presents enough side or other vulnerable armor surface for the SAP shells to penetrate.
This makes Johnston especially dangerous in close-range destroyer engagements. The combination of SAP and Burst Fire means the ship can front-load a large amount of damage into a short engagement window. Rather than attempting to win fights through long-range shell spam, the build aims to get into a range where the majority of the shells can reliably connect.
Target selection remains important because SAP is not universally effective. When an enemy becomes too sharply angled or presents armor that the SAP cannot penetrate, switching to HE can be more productive. HE also provides the option to start fires on larger ships when their armor layout makes SAP a poor choice.
The price for this gunpower is the torpedo armament. Johnston's torpedoes have a useful range, but their long reload time makes them considerably less flexible than those of a conventional Fletcher. They should therefore be treated as an additional source of pressure rather than the primary weapon system.
Smoke Generator is particularly valuable for this setup because Johnston's American-style shell arcs become increasingly difficult to exploit at long range. Smoke allows the ship to create a controlled firing position where the guns can work continuously without exposing Johnston to every enemy ship on the map.
The close-range nature of the build also makes capture-point positioning important. Johnston does not need to rush directly into a cap, but getting close enough to threaten an enemy destroyer with Burst Fire can make her an extremely effective cap-support ship. Players who want to specialize further in this role can replace Fearless Brawler with Radio Location, gaining additional information about the position and movement of concealed enemy destroyers.
Against larger ships, Johnston can use Smoke and terrain to maintain gunfire while choosing ammunition according to the target's armor and angle. SAP is excellent when there are vulnerable areas available, while HE becomes more useful against heavily armored or poorly positioned targets where SAP penetration is unreliable.
Johnston's biggest strength is therefore not simply raw gun DPM, but the ability to combine SAP, Burst Fire and Smoke into short, extremely damaging engagements. The ship rewards players who can get close enough to make the American guns reliable without staying exposed long enough for enemy cruisers and battleships to punish the engagement.
The same build applies to GQ Johnny. The two ships share the same essential combat characteristics, with GQ Johnny representing the alternate version of the Johnston.
Overall, Johnston is best played as an aggressive close-range SAP gunboat. Use concealment and Smoke to establish favorable engagements, rely on Burst Fire for sustained damage, switch between SAP and HE according to the target's armor and angle, and use Radio Location when you want to push the ship further toward dedicated destroyer hunting.
