Destroyer - U.S.A. Tier IX Hull - Captain & Gunboat Build
- Build focus: Mid-to-long-range open-water gunboating
- Main strength: Des Moines-style guns with excellent AP performance
- Survivability: Strong dodging ability and Repair Party compensate for the lack of Smoke
- Playstyle: Similar to a French destroyer, but with stronger AP and lower top speed
- Alternative: Trade Fearless Brawler for Concealment Expert for closer-range DD support and more reliable citadels
- Final skill: Gun Feeder for faster ammunition switching or Consumable Specialist for improved consumable cooldowns
- Engine Boost: Engine Boost Modification 1 is strongly recommended; use Engine Room Protection if unavailable
- Applies to: Hull
Hull is a U.S. Tier IX destroyer built around powerful cruiser-style firepower and open-water maneuvering. Her Des Moines-style guns give her excellent AP performance, while strong dodging abilities and a Repair Party provide the tools needed to remain effective without relying on a Smoke Generator.
The closest comparison is a French destroyer playstyle, but with a different balance of strengths. Hull is slower than the typical French speed-focused destroyer, yet compensates with substantially more threatening AP. Rather than relying purely on speed to survive, the ship combines maneuverability, range and sustained firepower to make itself a difficult target.
Open-water positioning is central to the build. Maintain enough distance from enemy battleships and cruisers to give yourself time to react to incoming salvos, then use changes in speed and direction to make their shots miss. The objective is not simply to kite away from the enemy, but to remain in a position where you can continuously punish exposed targets while minimizing the amount of damage you take.
Hull's AP is particularly dangerous against broadside cruisers. Look for opportunities where enemy ships expose their side while turning, disengaging or attempting to reposition. The combination of strong AP and accurate gunfire can produce heavy salvos and reliable citadel opportunities when the target gives you the correct angle.
For players who want to operate closer to the action, Concealment Expert can be taken instead of Fearless Brawler. The improved concealment makes it easier to support allied destroyers and get into positions where enemy cruisers are more likely to expose vulnerable sections. It can also improve the consistency of close-range AP engagements where citadel hits are more achievable.
The final one-point skill can be adapted to your preferred playstyle. Gun Feeder provides faster ammunition switching, allowing you to react immediately when an enemy changes angle and a different shell type becomes more effective. Consumable Specialist is an alternative for players who place greater value on getting the Repair Party and Engine Boost back into action sooner.
Engine Boost Modification 1 is particularly valuable for this style of gameplay because mobility is one of Hull's primary defensive tools. The longer boost duration gives you more freedom to dodge incoming fire and maintain the open-water engagement distance you need. If the modification is unavailable, Engine Room Protection is the practical fallback.
Overall, Hull rewards players who are comfortable with active open-water maneuvering. She does not have the safety net of smoke, so positioning mistakes can be punished heavily, but strong AP, a heal and reliable dodging ability give her the tools to stay in the fight. Keep moving, punish broadside targets and use your mobility to dictate the range of engagements rather than allowing the enemy to force the fight on their terms.
