- AP performance: Broadside cruisers and battleships can take heavy salvo damage, with cruiser citadels possible at close range
- Applies to: Nanning
Nanning is a true universal destroyer that combines several useful tools without having one defining weakness beyond her relatively high concealment for the role. She brings solid long-range gun performance, sea mines for torpedo attacks and Pan-Asian Smoke that can be used to create safe farming opportunities. This combination gives her the flexibility to contribute in almost every phase of a battle.
This build emphasizes Nanning's main battery while retaining enough concealment to perform the fundamental duties expected from a destroyer. You can still contest objectives, provide spotting and pressure enemy destroyers, but the build encourages making full use of the ship's guns whenever a safe firing opportunity presents itself.
Nanning's long-range guns make her particularly useful once the initial destroyer engagements are underway. Rather than constantly forcing close-range fights, look for opportunities to support allied DDs with gunfire while maintaining enough distance to avoid becoming an easy target. Her Smoke Generator can then be used to create periods of uninterrupted gunboat pressure when enemy attention becomes too dangerous.
The alternative skill setup can trade Demolition Expert and Priority Target for Basic Firing Training and Grease the Gears. This version puts more emphasis on sustained gun performance and gun handling, making it attractive for players who are comfortable judging incoming fire without relying heavily on Priority Target.
Extra Heavy AP Shells are another interesting option for Nanning. Her AP penetration is strong for the tier, allowing the ship to punish broadside cruisers and battleships much harder than enemies may expect from a destroyer. Under favorable conditions, broadside large ships can take repeated heavy salvos, while cruisers at close range can even present opportunities for citadel hits.
When using AP, target selection and angle are critical. Do not automatically switch ammunition simply because a larger ship is available. Look for broadside targets where the AP can penetrate the main belt or citadel rather than firing into heavily angled armor. This gives Nanning another way to generate large bursts of damage while her HE remains the more flexible choice against destroyers and unfavorable angles.
The Pan-Asian Smoke Generator also gives Nanning considerable flexibility when transitioning between roles. It can be used defensively when disengaging from an unfavorable fight, but it is particularly valuable when you have established a strong firing position and want to farm a target without remaining permanently exposed.
Nanning's main limitation is her detection range. For a universal destroyer, she cannot rely on stealth to the same degree as more specialized scouting or torpedo boats. Avoid treating her like a pure cap-contesting DD when the matchup is unfavorable. Instead, use concealment, terrain and Smoke to control when you commit to engagements and let the ship's gunpower do the heavy lifting.
Overall, Nanning rewards players who adapt their role to the situation. Contest objectives when the opportunity is favorable, support allied destroyers during important engagements, and transition into a gunboat when larger targets become available. Her combination of strong guns, Smoke and flexible torpedo utility makes her a dependable jack-of-all-trades destroyer rather than a ship built around a single gimmick.
