Destroyer - U.K. Tier IX Barfleur - Captain & Torpedo Build
- Build focus: A standard torpedo destroyer build designed around Barfleur's 12 km torpedoes and strong concealment.
- Playstyle: Focus on spotting, launching torpedoes at predictable targets and controlling important chokepoints rather than relying on gun damage.
- Torpedoes: Barfleur's 12 km torpedoes provide the range needed to attack larger ships while remaining outside their immediate threat range.
- Loading mechanic: Torpedo launchers reload individually, allowing Barfleur to progressively restore her torpedo armament rather than waiting for every launcher to reload simultaneously.
- Single launch: Individual torpedo firing gives Barfleur additional precision against stationary or predictable targets and allows torpedoes to be spread more deliberately.
- Radio Location: RPF is recommended for locating enemy destroyers and understanding their movement. Swap it for Superintendent if you are confident in predicting enemy DD movements.
- Gun armament: All of Barfleur's guns are positioned forward, which is useful when fighting bow-in but awkward when attempting to kite away from enemy destroyers.
- Anti-DD play: When forced into a destroyer fight, use allied support, terrain and stern-chase situations to compensate for Barfleur's unfavorable gun layout.
- Weakness: Barfleur does not have Hydroacoustic Search, so careless positioning around enemy torpedoes can be extremely dangerous.
- Applies to: IX Barfleur.
Barfleur is a dedicated British torpedo destroyer that sacrifices much of the gun power normally associated with a destroyer in exchange for stronger 12 km torpedoes. Her role is therefore straightforward: remain difficult to detect, provide vision for the team and continuously create threats with torpedoes rather than looking for prolonged gun engagements.
The torpedo armament is particularly interesting because of Barfleur's sequential loading mechanic. Instead of waiting for every launcher to become available at once, the torpedo racks reload one at a time. This gives the ship a more continuous torpedo presence and allows individual launchers to become available progressively during an engagement.
Barfleur's ability to launch torpedoes individually also makes her effective against stationary and predictable targets. Single-fire torpedoes can be placed more precisely than a conventional spread, allowing the player to adjust the pattern according to the target's speed, heading and expected maneuver. This is particularly useful around islands, chokepoints and areas where enemy ships have limited room to maneuver.
The standard torpedo destroyer build complements this role by prioritizing the tools that allow Barfleur to remain undetected while repeatedly launching torpedoes. The objective is not to maximize direct gun damage, but to create a constant threat that forces enemy ships to change course, slow down or abandon favorable positions.
Radio Location adds another layer of information to this playstyle. Knowing the approximate direction of the nearest enemy ship is particularly useful when operating around capture points or when trying to determine where an opposing destroyer is likely to be positioned. If you are already confident in predicting enemy DD movements, RPF can be exchanged for Superintendent to increase consumable availability.
Enemy destroyers should generally not be treated as targets that Barfleur must hunt down alone. The ship's reduced gun emphasis makes prolonged DD engagements undesirable. Instead, use your concealment to spot the opposing destroyer and try to draw it toward friendly ships. A stern chase can also improve the situation because it allows allied support to contribute while reducing the opponent's ability to exploit Barfleur's weaker gun positioning.
One unusual characteristic of Barfleur is that her main battery is entirely forward-facing. This creates an awkward situation during destroyer engagements. Conventional kiting would normally be a useful way to reduce incoming fire while maintaining gun pressure, but turning away from the enemy can significantly reduce Barfleur's ability to use her guns effectively.
In some situations, going bow-in can actually be the better option. By facing the enemy destroyer, Barfleur can bring the forward guns into action while using her maneuverability to dodge incoming shells. This is situational rather than a preferred method of fighting, but it can allow the ship to gradually reduce an enemy DD's HP when disengagement or allied support is not immediately available.
The most important defensive limitation is the absence of Hydroacoustic Search. Barfleur cannot rely on Hydro to detect incoming torpedoes early or to expose ships hiding in smoke. This makes awareness of enemy destroyer positions and torpedo threats especially important. Avoid blindly entering areas where an opposing destroyer can launch torpedoes without being detected.
Barfleur is at her strongest when she can maintain distance from direct combat while continuously influencing enemy movement. Use concealment and terrain to establish safe spotting positions, launch torpedoes into predictable routes and exploit chokepoints where enemy ships have limited maneuvering options.
The result is a traditional torpedo destroyer with several unique mechanics. The 12 km torpedoes provide useful reach, sequential loading keeps the torpedo armament active, and single-fire launches offer additional precision against predictable targets. Meanwhile, the unusual forward-only gun arrangement means Barfleur should avoid unnecessary gunfights and rely on positioning and team support when enemy destroyers come looking for her.
