- Applies to: Canarias
Canarias is a Tier VI Spanish heavy cruiser with a distinctive AP-focused playstyle. Unlike most cruisers, she does not carry HE ammunition, instead relying on improved AP shells and Engine Boost to dictate engagements. This makes her particularly dangerous against broadside targets, but considerably less comfortable when enemies remain angled toward her.
The build follows the general approach used for Spanish cruisers, with one important modification: Extra Heavy AP Shells are taken because Canarias has no HE ammunition. Since AP is the ship's primary damage source in every engagement, improving its performance makes considerably more sense than investing in skills designed around ammunition that Canarias cannot fire.
Target selection is extremely important. Broadside cruisers are among Canarias' best targets because her AP can punish exposed armor with heavy salvos. Battleships can also be attractive targets when they give you enough side to work with. Watch enemy maneuvers carefully and be ready to capitalize when a ship turns broadside, rather than wasting repeated salvos against an unfavorable angle.
The lack of HE is the biggest limitation of the ship. When an enemy remains angled, Canarias has fewer options for dealing consistent damage than a conventional cruiser. Rather than repeatedly firing AP into an unfavorable target, consider switching targets, repositioning or waiting for the enemy to expose more of their side.
Engine Boost adds useful flexibility to this playstyle. It can help Canarias reach favorable firing positions, reposition when an enemy changes direction, or disengage when remaining in an exposed position becomes too dangerous. Because your effectiveness depends heavily on finding good AP angles, mobility can be just as important as raw gun performance.
Canarias therefore rewards players who pay close attention to enemy positioning. The objective is not to continuously fire at whatever ship is in range, but to identify targets that can actually provide meaningful AP damage. When several enemies are angled, patience and repositioning can be more valuable than simply adding another salvo to the scoreboard.
Overall, Canarias is a specialized cruiser that trades ammunition flexibility for stronger AP performance and additional mobility. Stay mobile, look for broadside targets and avoid forcing engagements against ships that can comfortably angle against you. When enemies give you the side you need, Canarias can deliver punishing AP salvos for a Tier VI cruiser.
