Huanghe is a Pan-Asian Tier VI premium light cruiser with a playstyle that sits somewhere between a conventional cruiser and a large destroyer. Her low detectability, excellent maneuverability and Crawling Smoke Generator allow her to operate surprisingly close to the action, while Repair Party gives her some additional room for mistakes.
The ship's main battery consists of six 152 mm guns. Their relatively low number means Huanghe does not produce the same salvo weight as many other cruisers at the tier, and her short firing range further limits her ability to sit comfortably at long distances. Instead, her guns are most effective when combined with concealment and tactical positioning.
Crawling Smoke is one of Huanghe's defining advantages. Rather than simply creating a stationary smoke screen, the consumable allows the ship to remain concealed while moving. This makes it particularly useful for supporting allied destroyers, disengaging from dangerous situations and maintaining a useful firing position without exposing the fragile cruiser to the entire enemy team.
Because Huanghe has relatively low survivability, Smoke should be treated as an important defensive resource. Avoid waiting until you are already under concentrated fire before using it. Establish your position early, monitor which enemy ships can potentially punish you, and be ready to disappear when the situation begins to deteriorate.
Hydroacoustic Search is the more utility-focused option in the third consumable slot. It gives Huanghe additional information around islands and improves her ability to detect approaching torpedoes and ships in concealment. This is particularly useful when operating close to capture points or supporting friendly destroyers.
Torpedo Reload Booster provides a more aggressive alternative. Huanghe already carries torpedoes, and reducing their reload can create additional opportunities to punish enemies that push into close range. This option is more attractive for players who are comfortable using the ship's concealment and maneuverability to create ambush opportunities.
Huanghe's maneuverability is another major part of her defensive toolkit. Rather than relying entirely on armor or hit points, use changes in course and speed to make incoming shells miss. Her relatively small and agile hull can be difficult to hit when properly handled, especially when combined with Smoke and concealment.
The 152 mm HE shells have 25mm penetration, giving Huanghe useful access to lightly and moderately armored targets. However, her low number of guns means that damage output can feel inconsistent when compared with heavier cruisers. Focus on targets where your shells can reliably deal damage instead of attempting to brute-force heavily protected areas.
Supporting allied destroyers is one of the most effective ways to use Huanghe early in the battle. Her concealment allows her to position closer to contested areas than many cruisers, while Smoke gives her a way to survive when enemy attention turns toward her. Helping friendly DDs win an engagement can then create the space needed for Huanghe to operate more aggressively later.
Once the immediate destroyer threats have been dealt with, Huanghe can transition into a more conventional cruiser role. Continue using islands and concealment to control engagement ranges, while saving Smoke for situations where enemy fire becomes dangerous. Her mobility also allows her to relocate more easily than many smoke-dependent cruisers.
Huanghe is ultimately a utility-focused cruiser rather than a raw damage machine. Her low salvo weight and short gun range prevent her from competing with dedicated long-range farming cruisers, but excellent concealment, maneuverability, Crawling Smoke and flexible consumables give her several ways to influence a battle. Play around those strengths and avoid exposing the fragile hull unnecessarily.
Historically, Huanghe was based on HMS Aurora, an Arethusa-class British light cruiser. After being transferred to China, plans were made to modernize the ship with Soviet equipment, but the proposed reconstruction was never completed and the ship was eventually scrapped.
