Wukong is a Tier VIII Pan-Asian premium cruiser built around a combination of heavy cruiser guns and unusually powerful long-range torpedoes. Her nine 203 mm guns reach 17.58 km and reload in 10.5 seconds, giving her a conventional cruiser damage platform, while the Torpedo Reload Booster gives her an additional way to threaten enemy ships.
The ship is particularly interesting because her two main weapon systems encourage different engagement patterns. The main battery is suited to sustained mid-to-long-range cruiser combat, while the torpedoes can be launched from outside normal detection ranges to deny areas and punish ships that continue pushing into your position.
HE is the default ammunition when targets are angled or heavily armored. Wukong's 203 mm HE shells penetrate 34 mm of armor and have a 15% base fire chance, allowing the ship to maintain pressure on battleships and angled cruisers.
AP becomes increasingly valuable when an enemy cruiser exposes its broadside. Wukong's 203 mm AP shells deal up to 4,900 damage and have enough penetration to punish exposed cruiser hulls at appropriate ranges. Rather than firing HE automatically, watch enemy angles and switch to AP when a high-value broadside appears.
Wukong's captain build should follow a conventional cruiser philosophy, emphasizing main battery performance while retaining enough survivability to remain effective throughout the battle. Adrenaline Rush is particularly useful because every point of HP lost can translate into faster reload and therefore additional damage output.
Survivability is important because Wukong cannot rely entirely on her concealment to avoid damage. Her Repair Party provides valuable recovery, so preserving HP early in the battle allows you to make more aggressive plays later when the enemy fleet has been weakened.
Concealment Expert is another strong investment because it gives Wukong more control over when engagements begin. A lower detection radius makes it easier to disengage after firing, reposition between flanks and approach an enemy position before launching a surprise torpedo attack.
Wukong's torpedoes are one of the defining features of the ship. They have long range and high damage, but the ship carries relatively few torpedoes in each salvo. This means individual launches should be aimed carefully rather than treating the torpedo armament as a conventional destroyer-style torpedo wall.
The Torpedo Reload Booster significantly increases the value of the torpedo armament. It allows Wukong to create additional torpedo pressure when an enemy push develops or when several ships are committed to a predictable route. Use it when you can generate meaningful area denial rather than simply reloading a rack that has no useful target.
Long-range torpedoes are particularly effective against battleships and cruisers that are committed to an island, channel or capture area. You do not necessarily need to score a direct hit for them to be useful. A well-placed spread can force an enemy ship to turn, slow down or abandon a position, creating an advantage for your team.
Wukong's torpedoes also become more dangerous as the battle progresses. When enemy ships have fewer escape routes and are forced into predictable movements, the combination of long range and Torpedo Reload Booster can create repeated threats without requiring Wukong to enter dangerous positions.
Despite the strong torpedo armament, Wukong should not be played like a destroyer. Her main battery remains a major part of her damage output, and the cruiser is much more effective when she can combine gunfire with torpedo pressure rather than constantly searching for close-range torpedo attacks.
Mid-to-long-range positioning is generally the safest approach. Wukong can use her 17.58 km gun range to contribute damage while maintaining enough distance to react to battleship salvos. As enemy numbers decrease, she can gradually move closer and make better use of her torpedoes and cruiser AP.
Her strong citadel protection gives Wukong some additional forgiveness compared with many fragile light cruisers. However, this should not encourage unnecessary broadside positioning. Battleship AP remains a serious threat, and the safest way to exploit Wukong's firepower is to combine appropriate angling with movement and range.
Against battleships, maintain distance and use HE as the primary ammunition. Look for opportunities to start fires and use torpedoes when the battleship commits to a predictable course. If the target begins turning away from incoming torpedoes, the change in angle can also create a better opportunity for your main battery.
Against cruisers, target selection and ammunition choice are more important. Use HE against angled ships, but switch to AP when a cruiser presents a broadside. A cruiser attempting to dodge torpedoes can inadvertently expose its side to Wukong's 203 mm AP, allowing the two weapon systems to work together.
Against destroyers, avoid relying on the torpedoes as your primary counter. Wukong's guns can punish an exposed destroyer, but the cruiser is not designed to hunt destroyers at knife-fighting range. Use allied spotting, Hydro or other team support where available and avoid sacrificing your HP simply to chase a concealed target.
The Spotting Aircraft provides an additional option when the battle requires longer-range pressure. It can be used to extend Wukong's effective firing range and maintain damage output when approaching the enemy would expose the ship to too much return fire.
One of Wukong's main tactical advantages is flexibility. She can farm from range with her main battery, punish cruiser broadsides with AP, use torpedoes to deny important areas and employ the Torpedo Reload Booster to create additional pressure. Good positioning allows all of these tools to remain available without forcing the ship into unnecessary risks.
The main weakness of the torpedo armament is the low number of torpedoes per salvo. Missing a spread can therefore be considerably more costly than it would be on a ship with a larger torpedo complement. Take time to predict the target's movement and use terrain or allied pressure to limit the enemy's escape options before committing your torpedoes.
Wukong becomes particularly effective in the mid and late game. Once enemy ships are damaged and their movement options become more limited, her long-range torpedoes become easier to land while her 203 mm guns can punish cruisers attempting to reposition. Preserving HP during the opening stages gives you much more freedom to exploit these advantages later.
Overall, Wukong is a versatile Tier VIII Pan-Asian cruiser that combines conventional 203 mm cruiser firepower with a powerful long-range torpedo armament. Her strengths are her gun range, heavy AP, long-range high-damage torpedoes, Repair Party and Torpedo Reload Booster, while her relatively low torpedo count per salvo requires careful aiming.
The best results come from treating Wukong as a cruiser first and a torpedo ship second. Maintain mid-to-long-range firing positions, use AP when cruisers expose their broadsides, apply HE pressure against angled targets, and reserve the torpedo armament for predictable enemy movements. When the opportunity appears, the Torpedo Reload Booster can turn a single push into a dangerous torpedo field while your main battery continues dealing damage from range.
