Hampshire is a Tier VIII British premium heavy cruiser built around AP-only firepower, concealment and opportunistic close-range engagements. Her five twin 203 mm turrets combine accurate cruiser dispersion with powerful AP shells, while the ship's improved penetration angles allow those shells to remain effective against targets that would normally be difficult to punish with AP.
Hampshire's AP ricochet angles are particularly important to her gameplay. The shells begin checking for ricochet at 60 degrees and only automatically ricochet at 75 degrees, allowing them to penetrate targets that are noticeably angled rather than requiring a perfect broadside. This makes Hampshire especially dangerous against cruisers that believe they are sufficiently angled to avoid AP damage.
The ship's AP also uses a very short 0.005-second fuse and a low 12 mm arming threshold. This combination makes the ammunition particularly effective against lightly armored targets, including destroyers. When a destroyer is exposed at close or medium range, Hampshire can punish it with AP rather than needing a conventional HE ammunition option.
The recommended captain setup is a modified cruiser build designed around Hampshire's unusual strengths. Several three-point skills are considered too valuable to sacrifice for most four-point options. Superintendent provides an additional Repair Party, Survivability Expert adds much-needed hit points, Heavy AP Shells provides a direct increase to the ship's AP damage, and Adrenaline Rush improves reload as Hampshire loses HP.
Concealment Expert is the major four-point exception. Hampshire's low concealment is central to her intended playstyle because it allows her to approach enemy ships before they have enough time to react. The ability to remain hidden until an enemy cruiser exposes a useful angle can be more valuable than simply increasing long-range damage output.
With a concealment-focused setup, Hampshire can reach approximately 9.3 km surface detectability. This creates a significant tactical window in which you can approach an enemy cruiser without immediately announcing your presence. The objective is not to rush into point-blank combat, but to close the distance until your AP becomes exceptionally difficult for the target to survive.
Superintendent is especially valuable because Hampshire has access to Repair Party. The additional heal gives the ship more opportunity to recover from the damage inevitably taken while operating closer to the enemy. It also reinforces the importance of preserving HP rather than treating the cruiser as disposable once an ambush has been completed.
Survivability Expert is similarly important because Hampshire has a relatively low HP pool for a Tier VIII heavy cruiser. The additional hit points provide more margin for error during close-range engagements and give Adrenaline Rush more opportunity to improve the main battery reload after damage has been taken.
Heavy AP and SAP Shells is an unusually straightforward damage increase for Hampshire because AP is the ship's only main battery ammunition. There is no HE ammunition to complicate the choice: when you fire the main battery, you are always looking for opportunities to maximize AP damage through penetration, citadels and well-placed salvos.
Top Grade Gunner and Outnumbered are possible alternatives for players who want a more aggressive build. However, the recommended approach is to trade Survivability Expert and Priority Target when making room for these four-point skills. This creates a more damage-oriented Hampshire at the expense of some of the survivability that makes the standard build consistent.
Hampshire is at her best when used as an AP ambush cruiser. Approach under concealment, identify a target that is likely to remain broadside or only moderately angled, and open fire when the engagement is favorable. The first salvo can be particularly important because the enemy will often begin turning immediately after realizing where the fire is coming from.
Once the enemy starts angling heavily, do not stubbornly remain exposed simply because Hampshire has improved AP angles. The improved angles make the ship more forgiving, but they do not eliminate the benefits of a broadside target. If the opponent begins presenting an unfavorable angle, disengage, disappear into concealment and look for another opportunity.
This is where Hampshire's concealment becomes a weapon rather than simply a defensive statistic. A successful ambush can be followed by a disengagement before the enemy fleet has enough time to concentrate fire. Once hidden, you can reposition and repeat the process against another target rather than remaining locked into a losing engagement.
The ship also has a viable long-range alternative. When approaching the enemy is too dangerous, use the Spotting Aircraft to extend Hampshire's effective engagement range and continue applying AP damage from a safer position. At sufficient range, the shell trajectory can also create opportunities to penetrate the deck armor of some targets, giving the ship a way to contribute even when a close-range ambush is unavailable.
Hampshire's Spotting Aircraft is therefore more than a range extension for farming. It gives the ship a second tactical mode. You can begin a battle cautiously at longer range, identify enemy positioning and wait for the frontline to develop before transitioning into the close-range ambush role that makes the ship particularly dangerous.
Her 10 km torpedoes provide another useful option when an engagement moves into close quarters. They can be launched individually, allowing you to create more flexible spreads and adjust individual torpedo trajectories. However, the torpedoes should support the AP ambush playstyle rather than encouraging unnecessary brawls.
Be especially careful when approaching an enemy cruiser or battleship that is likely to have AP loaded. Hampshire's raised citadel and relatively small HP pool make an exposed broadside extremely dangerous. The concealment advantage gives you the ability to choose the engagement, so use it to attack distracted or poorly positioned targets rather than voluntarily presenting your own broadside first.
Against cruisers, Hampshire's AP is at its most threatening. Watch the target's rudder and hull angle and prepare your salvo for the moment when the enemy begins turning. Because the AP can still penetrate at angles where conventional cruiser AP would ricochet, Hampshire can continue dealing damage even after the opponent starts trying to angle away.
Against destroyers, the short AP fuse and low arming threshold make Hampshire unusually dangerous when the target is sufficiently exposed. However, do not chase a destroyer into a torpedo trap simply because your AP is effective against it. Hydroacoustic Search and allied spotting are much safer ways to create the conditions for a successful engagement.
Against battleships, Hampshire is more dependent on positioning and range. Look for broadside sections and use AP against areas where the shells can penetrate effectively. When a battleship angles heavily, consider disengaging or using long-range fire until the target presents a better opportunity rather than attempting to force damage through unfavorable armor.
Hampshire's Hydroacoustic Search is valuable when operating close to islands, capture areas or enemy positions. It provides additional warning against torpedoes and concealed ships and can make an ambush approach considerably safer. The combination of low concealment and Hydro gives Hampshire useful control over when and where close-range fights occur.
The ship's biggest limitation is that her damage output depends heavily on enemy positioning. Hampshire has no HE to fall back on when targets refuse to expose useful armor angles, and her sustained damage is not the primary attraction of the ship. Patient target selection is therefore more important than simply maximizing the number of shells fired.
Overall, Hampshire is a specialized Tier VIII British heavy cruiser that rewards players who understand concealment, AP mechanics and target positioning. Her 60–75 degree AP angles, short fuse, low arming threshold and 203 mm guns make her exceptionally good at punishing cruisers and even destroyers that expose themselves, while Repair Party and Hydroacoustic Search provide the utility needed to support aggressive positioning.
The ideal approach is to remain patient, use the 9.3 km concealment to get into position, and wait for an enemy mistake. Strike hard with AP, then disengage if the target begins angling or the enemy fleet turns its attention toward you. When a close approach is not practical, switch to the Spotting Aircraft and contribute from range. Hampshire is at her strongest when you control the engagement rather than allowing the enemy to dictate it.
