Cruiser - Germany Tier VIII Schill
Captain & Ship Build and Strategy Guide

- Primary ammunition: AP against broadside targets, HE when enemies are angled
- Key strength: Accurate 283 mm guns with high AP alpha and Main Battery Reload Booster
- Combat range: Mid-to-long range
- Captain focus: Standard cruiser build with emphasis on damage output and survivability
- Outnumbered: Optional; less important because Schill uses standard cruiser accuracy
- Alternative: If taking Outnumbered, trade Survivability Expert and your preferred 1-point skill
- Commander: Lütjens provides relatively small benefits; prioritize him on other ships
- Hydro upgrade: Hydroacoustic Search Modification 1 is recommended
- Alternative upgrade: If you don’t have the Hydro mod, use Damage Control System Modification 1
- Playstyle: Accurate mid-to-long-range cruiser with burst AP damage and opportunistic torpedo attacks
- Applies to: Germany Tier VIII Schill
Schill is a Tier VIII German large cruiser designed around accurate 283 mm guns, strong AP alpha damage and short periods of exceptionally high firepower. Her Main Battery Reload Booster allows her to create dangerous burst windows, particularly when an enemy cruiser exposes its broadside. In that role, Schill is essentially an upgraded interpretation of the Graf Spee concept, combining large-caliber cruiser guns with a more refined long-range damage profile.
The defining feature of Schill is not sustained DPM. Her guns can hit extremely hard, but the ship does not want to trade shells continuously with opponents that have a significant sustained-fire advantage. Instead, look for mistakes and punish them. A broadside cruiser can suddenly lose a large portion of its health when Schill combines accurate AP fire with the Main Battery Reload Booster.
AP should therefore be the ammunition you are most interested in using when enemy cruisers expose their sides. The large 283 mm shells provide substantially more impact per successful penetration than typical light-cruiser ammunition. Keep HE loaded when targets are angled or when you need to maintain pressure without waiting for a favorable broadside.
The Main Battery Reload Booster is best treated as a burst-damage tool rather than something that should be activated on cooldown. Save it for situations where the target is unable to immediately disengage or change angle. A cruiser caught broadside during a turn is an especially attractive target because the rapid succession of salvos can punish the mistake before the enemy has time to recover.
Schill uses a standard cruiser captain build rather than a specialized battlecruiser setup. Her normal accuracy is already good enough that Outnumbered provides less value than it does on ships whose dispersion can be significantly improved by the skill. This makes Survivability Expert a more attractive default choice for maintaining Schill's effectiveness throughout the battle.
Outnumbered is still a viable alternative if you specifically want to maximize Schill's offensive potential. If you choose it, the recommended approach is to trade Survivability Expert along with your preferred one-point skill. This creates a more aggressive build, but it comes at the cost of additional survivability.
Lütjens can be used effectively on Schill, but his benefits are relatively small compared with the value he can provide on other German ships. If you have a limited number of highly trained German commanders, Schill does not need to be the first ship assigned to Lütjens.
Schill can absorb a reasonable amount of punishment when properly angled and positioned, but that should not be confused with being a ship that wants to tank the enemy fleet. Her best defensive tool is still engagement distance. Fighting from mid-to-long range gives you more time to react to incoming battleship salvos and makes it easier to disengage when several enemy ships turn their guns toward you.
Kiting is particularly useful when Schill is under pressure. Keep the ship moving, vary your speed and rudder angle, and use the ship's range to force enemy battleships to make difficult shots. The objective is to continue producing damage without allowing the enemy to establish an easy firing solution against your hull.
Hydroacoustic Search provides valuable utility when Schill has to operate around islands or in contested areas. It helps detect incoming torpedoes and concealed ships, making aggressive positioning safer. Hydro is especially useful when you are preparing to push toward an enemy position or when torpedo threats could otherwise restrict your movement.
Hydroacoustic Search Modification 1 is therefore the preferred upgrade for the Hydro slot. If you do not have the Hydro modification, Damage Control System Modification 1 is a perfectly reasonable alternative. The latter provides general-purpose protection and does not force you to change the fundamental playstyle of the ship.
Schill's torpedoes give her additional options when the battle moves into closer quarters. They can discourage enemy ships from pushing directly into your position and can be used to finish damaged targets. However, the torpedoes should be considered a secondary weapon rather than the core of the build.
Close-range fighting is possible, but it should be selective. If you enter a straight DPM exchange against a ship with substantially better sustained firepower, Schill's burst potential will not compensate indefinitely. Use the torpedoes, armor and maneuverability to make favorable close-range engagements possible, rather than seeking them out from the beginning of the battle.
Against battleships, HE is a useful way to maintain pressure when they are angled. You can continue farming damage while waiting for an opportunity to switch targets or punish a broadside. When a battleship begins focusing on another ship, that can be your opportunity to move into a more aggressive position or use your Reload Booster for additional damage.
Against cruisers, however, Schill becomes much more dangerous. Watch enemy movement carefully and anticipate when a cruiser will turn. The moment a broadside becomes available, AP combined with accurate 283 mm fire can produce a devastating result. Patience is often more valuable than simply firing every available salvo.
Destroyers are not Schill's ideal primary targets, particularly when they can dictate the engagement range. Use allied spotting whenever possible and avoid pushing into areas where a destroyer can freely torpedo you. Hydroacoustic Search becomes particularly useful when operating near capture areas, islands and likely torpedo approaches.
The ship's relatively poor sustained damage output is the main limitation to keep in mind. If enemy ships refuse to expose their broadsides, Schill loses much of the advantage provided by her large-caliber AP. In these situations, HE is perfectly acceptable and should be used to keep targets under pressure rather than waiting indefinitely for the perfect AP shot.
This makes target selection one of the most important skills when playing Schill. You are looking for ships that are distracted, turning, isolated or otherwise unable to maintain an optimal angle. A cooperative enemy can make Schill extremely powerful, but a cautious opponent can significantly reduce her burst potential.
Schill is consequently best played as a patient damage dealer rather than a traditional frontline cruiser. Maintain a useful firing position, watch enemy angles, preserve your HP and wait for opportunities to exploit the large-caliber guns. When the opportunity appears, the Main Battery Reload Booster can turn a single mistake into a major swing in HP.
Overall, Schill is a specialized German large cruiser that rewards accurate aim and good target selection. Her 283 mm guns, strong AP alpha and Main Battery Reload Booster give her exceptional burst potential against broadside cruisers, while her Hydroacoustic Search and torpedoes provide additional utility when the fight moves closer.
The standard cruiser build is the best general-purpose approach. Outnumbered can be added for a more aggressive setup, but it is less necessary because Schill already has standard cruiser accuracy. Keep Lütjens available for ships where his bonuses have greater impact, use Hydroacoustic Search Modification 1 when available, and otherwise take Damage Control System Modification 1. Most importantly, fight from mid-to-long range and wait for the broadside that lets Schill do what she does best—deliver devastating burst damage.
