Spanish CA Castilla Line - Standard Build
- Spanish CA mid-long range kiting cruiser with a unique burst fire mechanic, firing guns twice per salvo in exchange for a long reload penalty. Extremely potent when used properly, but careless use will lower overall damage output and leave you defenseless in worst case scenarios. Otherwise fairly standard CA gameplay.
- This build is a standard DPS CA build, adapted for ES CAs, that maximises concealment for maximum possible engagement control, while also buffing firepower in a reasonable way.
- If you feel like you need warning when being shot at, swap GtG for IFA.
- If you don’t have the Spotter mod, use MAM1.
- If you don’t have the Hydro mod, use ERP.
- Castilla plays similarly to other damage farming kiting cruisers like Hindenberg and Zao. Stay at mid-range, out HP trade the enemy, and move in once nothing is left to stop you. Burst fire trades DPM for immediate firepower, useful for several situations like: About to disengage, about to die, shooting 2 salvoes of AP into a broadside cruiser, shooting a low health ship before he goes dark, etc.

The Spanish Tier X heavy cruiser Castilla is one of the most underrepresented ships in high-tier World of Warships random battles. Often passed over for traditional HE-farmers like Zao or heavily armored brawlers, Castilla brings a specialized toolset: 254mm guns with precise cruiser dispersion, blistering speed, and a high-alpha burst-fire gimmick.
The Strengths & Hidden Pitfalls
Strengths
- Guns & Accuracy: 254mm main battery with standard cruiser dispersion (not battlecruiser dispersion).
- Cruiser Overmatch: AP overmatches light cruisers like Minotaur.
- Burst Fire: Fires two salvos back-to-back within 1 second.
Weaknesses
- Weak Base DPM: Poor HE output (~143k) and low fires per minute (~6.5).
- Burst Fire Penalty: Triggering burst mode nerfs your long-term DPM reload. Do not use it against angled targets.
- Vulnerable Armor: 30mm armor deck and upper belt get consistently overmatched by heavy battleships.
- Golden Rule: Do not play Castilla as a static HE farmer. Sitting back behind islands leads to low damage numbers. You must aggressively push flanks to catch crossfire broadsides.
Tactical Playstyle Strategy
- Flank Aggressively: Use your 40+ knot speed to isolate yourself on a flank and create crossfires against enemy positions.
- Master the Burst Fire: Save burst mode for broadside targets emerging from island cover, blindfiring dark ships, or setting a perma-fire immediately after an enemy BB uses Damage Control.
- Rely on AP: Castilla's high-penetration 254mm AP shells are where the majority of your game-winning damage comes from.
