Cruisers - Germany CA Hindenburg Line
Captain & Ship Build and Strategy Guide
German CA Hindenburg Line - Standard Build
- Build focus: Concealment, damage output and survivability
- Playstyle: Mid-range damage farming and kiting
- Main strengths: Improved HE penetration, increased AP damage and long-range Hydro
- Main weakness: Slow speed limits positioning and repositioning options
- Build type: Standard DPS CA build
- Skill option: SI can be exchanged for HAP or other useful skill combinations
- Hindenburg & Roon: Can potentially skip the additional repair charge because they already have 4 repairs by default
- Prinz Eugen: Take SI as the first 3-point skill because she only has 3 repairs
- Commander: Von Jütland is a useful option because of his improved CS skill
- Slot 1: Spotting Aircraft Modification 1; use Main Armaments Modification 1 if unavailable
- Hydro option: Hydroacoustic Search Modification; use Emergency Repair Specialist if unavailable
- Applies to: Yorck, Hipper, Prinz Eugen, Roon, Hindenburg and Clausewitz
The German heavy-cruiser line from Yorck through Hindenburg is built around consistent mid-range damage, kiting and strong consumable utility. Improved HE penetration and increased AP damage give these cruisers reliable offensive output, while long-range Hydro and additional Repair Party capacity help them remain active in extended engagements.
This standard build is designed as a DPS cruiser setup that emphasizes concealment to give the ship greater control over when and where engagements take place. Firepower is still improved, but the build avoids sacrificing too much survivability in pursuit of maximum damage.
SI can be exchanged for HAP or another combination of useful skills depending on the ship and your personal preferences. Hindenburg and Roon already have four Repair Party charges by default, so they may not always need the additional charge provided by SI.
Prinz Eugen is the notable exception. When using this shared build on Eugen, make SI your first 3-point skill because she only has three Repair Party charges. The additional repair capacity is therefore more important on Eugen than it is on the higher-tier ships with four charges.
The German cruisers are generally strongest when fighting from mid range and kiting away from enemy pushes. Their HE penetration allows them to maintain reliable damage against targets that other cruisers may struggle to penetrate, while their AP becomes particularly valuable whenever an enemy cruiser exposes a broadside.
The main limitation of the line is mobility. These ships are not particularly fast, so repositioning requires more planning than it does on high-speed kiting cruisers. Watch the minimap carefully and begin moving before a flank becomes impossible to hold. Good positioning is especially important because speed cannot easily rescue you from a bad location.
Long-range Hydro is one of the line's most useful tools. It provides additional information around islands and objectives and makes these cruisers particularly effective at supporting destroyers. Use Hydro to detect approaching torpedoes and nearby ships, but avoid allowing the utility of the consumable to tempt you into positions where multiple enemies can focus you.
Von Jütland is a useful commander for the German CA line because of his improved CS skill. His commander skills complement the consumable-oriented nature of the ships and can make the shared build more effective across several German cruisers.
For equipment, use Spotting Aircraft Modification 1 when available, with Main Armaments Modification 1 as the fallback. When Hydroacoustic Search Modification is unavailable, Emergency Repair Specialist is the alternative. These choices keep the build centered on the line's core strengths of vision, utility and sustained damage.
Königsberg and Nürnberg should be handled differently if you want a dedicated build for those ships. The shared Hindenburg-line setup is intended for Yorck, Hipper, Prinz Eugen, Roon, Hindenburg and Clausewitz; for a dedicated Königsberg or Nürnberg setup, refer to the Mainz build instead.
The overall playstyle is straightforward: stay mobile, farm damage from mid range and use concealment to control your engagements. Avoid committing too far forward because the slow speed makes disengagement difficult, but do not remain so far back that you cannot influence destroyer and cruiser fights around objectives.
The Hindenburg line rewards patient target selection and sustained pressure. Use concealment to choose your fights, exploit the excellent HE penetration and AP damage, make good use of Hydro and preserve your HP so you can remain a threat throughout the battle.
