Destroyer - Europe Tier VII Stord '43 - Captain & Gunboat Build
- Build focus: A hybrid gunboat build for Stord '43, using her rapid-firing 120 mm guns as the primary weapon while keeping her fast 10 km torpedoes as a secondary source of pressure.
- Playstyle: Stord '43 combines Smoke Generator with Repair Party, allowing her to take calculated gunfights and recover HP. Her poor concealment makes her less effective as a traditional stealth destroyer.
- Main battery: Four 120 mm guns reload in just 3.7 seconds and have an 11.8 km firing range. The ship can use both HE and SAP ammunition depending on the target.
- Torpedoes: Eight torpedoes are arranged in two quadruple launchers. They reach 10 km and travel at 76 knots with a 90-second reload, but their relatively low damage makes them better for pressure and area denial than relying on single-salvo damage.
- Survivability: Stord '43 has a small HP pool but compensates with two Repair Party charges. Use Smoke Generator to control engagements and preserve HP for situations where the heal can provide maximum value.
- Weakness: High detectability limits Stord '43's ability to contest enemy destroyers directly. Avoid relying on concealment alone and use smoke, positioning and gun range to control engagements.
- Applies to: VII Stord '43.
Stord '43 is an unusual European destroyer because she does not fit cleanly into the traditional stealthy torpedo-boat role associated with many ships in the line. Her strongest feature is the combination of rapid-firing guns, Smoke Generator and Repair Party. That combination rewards a player who is comfortable taking short, controlled engagements rather than remaining permanently exposed in open water.
The four 120 mm guns reload every 3.7 seconds and can fire both HE and SAP. This gives Stord '43 a reliable source of sustained damage, particularly when fighting targets that can be engaged safely from smoke. The guns also have a relatively fast 18-second 180-degree traverse, which helps when maneuvering between firing positions or reacting to changing targets.
Stord '43's Repair Party is what allows this aggressive gunboat approach to work. The ship starts with a relatively small HP pool, so trading health for damage without a plan can quickly become fatal. Instead, use Smoke Generator to create controlled firing windows, disengage before taking excessive damage and use Repair Party to recover from engagements that would permanently cripple a normal destroyer.
The torpedoes complement the guns rather than replacing them. Their 10 km range and 76-knot speed make them useful for threatening battleships and cruisers from outside the ship's preferred gunfighting distance, while their relatively low 7,533 maximum damage means they should not be treated as the main source of burst damage. Their relatively quick reload also makes repeated area denial possible.
The biggest challenge is Stord '43's concealment. With 7.5 km base surface detectability, the ship can struggle to dictate engagements against stealthier destroyers. This makes positioning especially important: use islands, smoke and friendly spotting to avoid being caught in an unfavorable engagement. When the opportunity is available, the combination of rapid-firing guns and Repair Party allows Stord '43 to punish opponents while preserving enough health to remain useful later in the battle.
Overall, Stord '43 is best approached as a gun-focused hybrid destroyer. Build around the main battery and use the Smoke Generator and Repair Party to sustain your presence in fights, while the fast 10 km torpedoes provide additional pressure and area denial. This approach makes better use of the ship's strengths than attempting to overcome its poor concealment by playing as a conventional stealth torpedo boat.
