- Applies to: Ragnar
Ragnar is a Tier X European destroyer that plays more like a small cruiser than a traditional torpedo-focused destroyer. Her super-accurate cruiser-caliber guns and 7.5 km Surveillance Radar make her particularly effective at hunting enemy destroyers while still providing strong long-range gunboat damage.
The standard build is designed to balance objective control and damage farming. Ragnar can support friendly destroyers around capture points with Radar, then transition into a long-range gun platform when the immediate contest is over. The main challenge is her poor agility, which makes positioning and disengagement much more important than on conventional destroyers.
Advanced Firing Training is useful when you want additional main-battery range, but if you need the extra range and do not have enough commander points for the skill, you can instead replace the Slot 6 main-battery reload modification with the range modification. This gives up some rate of fire in exchange for additional reach.
For a dedicated damage-farming setup, Concealment Expert can be exchanged for Fearless Brawler. This increases the offensive focus of the build, but it also removes much of Ragnar's stealth advantage. You should therefore expect to fight from longer ranges and give up some of the flexibility associated with the standard concealment setup.
Jerzy Świrski is an excellent commander choice because of his improved Adrenaline Rush. Ragnar can generate significant value from additional reload speed as the ship takes damage, making the improved skill particularly useful during extended gunfights. His commander abilities also make him a natural fit for Ragnar's aggressive gunboat role.
Engine Boost Modification 1 is preferred in Slot 2 over Surveillance Radar Modification 1. Ragnar's base Radar lasts 30 seconds, which is generally enough to expose and pressure a destroyer without needing an extended duration. Chasing a destroyer into the open simply to gain more Radar time can put Ragnar in a dangerous position, especially because of her limited maneuverability.
If you do not have Engine Boost Modification 1, use Engine Room Protection instead. However, considering Ragnar's high resource cost, investing in the optimal Slot 2 modification is worthwhile if you intend to play the ship regularly.
In battle, avoid thinking of Ragnar as a destroyer that must constantly contest caps at knife-fighting range. Use concealment, Radar and accurate gunfire to pressure enemy destroyers while maintaining enough distance to survive the inevitable return fire. Once hostile DDs are removed or weakened, Ragnar becomes an excellent long-range damage platform.
Her poor maneuverability means you should plan engagements before they begin. Avoid sailing deep into open water without an exit route, and be careful when committing to a flank. Ragnar's guns are powerful enough to dominate a fight, but her relatively limited ability to dodge incoming fire makes getting caught in a bad position particularly dangerous.
The standard build therefore provides a useful balance between aggression and control. Use Radar to support objective fights, exploit your exceptional gun accuracy from range and use Engine Boost to reposition before the enemy can force you into an unfavorable engagement.
Ragnar is ultimately a destroyer hunter and long-range gunboat rather than a conventional torpedo destroyer. The ship rewards intelligent positioning, patience and target selection. When you can control the engagement distance, her accurate guns and Radar give you the tools to dictate how the fight develops.
