Destroyer - Japan Tier VIII Shigure - Captain & Torpedo Build
- Build focus: A dedicated torpedo destroyer build for Shigure, maximizing her exceptional concealment and Torpedo Reload Booster for repeated torpedo attacks.
- Playstyle: Shigure is a highly specialized Japanese torpedo destroyer. Her extremely low concealment makes her excellent at spotting and launching torpedoes, but her low gun DPM and slow speed make direct destroyer gunfights extremely unfavorable.
- Captain skills: Use the standard Japanese torpedo destroyer build. You can trade Radio Location (RPF) for Swift in Silence (SiS) if you are confident in predicting enemy destroyer movements, or trade Fill the Tubes for Survivability-related skills if additional survivability is preferred.
- Gun build: Unlike some other Japanese torpedo destroyers, a dedicated gun build is not recommended for Shigure because her base gun DPM is too low to reliably fight other stealth-focused destroyers even with significant skill investment.
- Recommended commander: Takeo Suzuki is recommended because of his improved Survivability Expert skill.
- Smoke: Shigure's Exhaust Smoke Generator allows her to remain concealed while travelling at full speed. This can be used to maintain spotting pressure, disengage quickly or occasionally fire her guns while another ship provides spotting.
- Upgrade alternative: If you do not have the Engine Boost Modification 1 upgrade, use Engine Room Protection (ERP) instead.
- Applies to: VIII Shigure.
Shigure represents an extreme version of the Japanese torpedo destroyer concept. Rather than offering a balanced combination of guns, torpedoes and mobility, the ship is heavily optimized around concealment and torpedo attacks. This gives Shigure an exceptional ability to remain undetected while positioning against larger targets, but it also leaves her with very limited options when another destroyer forces a direct gunfight.
The result is a ship that should be played through information and positioning. Shigure's job is to provide spotting, identify vulnerable targets and use her torpedoes to create pressure. Against enemy destroyers, simply maintaining vision can be valuable even when firing the guns is not. A successful engagement may mean forcing the opposing destroyer away from an objective, making it turn because of incoming torpedoes or allowing allied ships to finish the target.
Her Torpedo Reload Booster makes this approach particularly effective against predictable targets. Rather than waiting for one perfect torpedo opportunity, Shigure can use successive launches to cover multiple escape routes or punish ships that continue sailing on similar courses. Battleships and cruisers are therefore the preferred targets for the ship's main offensive weapon.
Shigure's guns should generally be treated as a last resort. Her low gun DPM means that investing heavily into a gun-focused build does not solve the fundamental problem of fighting stealthy enemy destroyers. If another destroyer is spotted, the preferred response is usually to maintain spotting, use concealment to avoid detection and let the enemy make the first mistake rather than committing to a prolonged gun duel.
The Exhaust Smoke Generator gives Shigure an additional advantage over conventional smoke-equipped destroyers. She can activate smoke while travelling at full speed instead of slowing down to remain inside a stationary smoke screen. This makes it particularly useful for breaking contact, maintaining spotting pressure or changing position without giving opponents an easy target.
There are, however, important counters to this playstyle. Radar-equipped destroyers can remove much of Shigure's concealment advantage, making their detection range especially dangerous. Cossack is an important threat because its Hydroacoustic Search can also interfere with Shigure's torpedo attacks at close range. Avoid allowing these ships to dictate the engagement and use Shigure's concealment to choose when and where the fight happens.
Historically, Shigure developed a reputation as a lucky destroyer after surviving numerous dangerous encounters during the Pacific War before eventually being sunk in early 1945. In World of Warships, that reputation translates into a ship whose greatest strength is avoiding direct confrontation: stay hidden, maintain spotting pressure and look for opportunities to overwhelm larger targets with repeated torpedo attacks.
