- Applies to: Karl XIV Johan
Karl XIV Johan is a Tier IX European battleship with an unusual combination of features. She carries twelve 305mm guns, long-range torpedoes, excellent concealment and Hydroacoustic Search, making her much more flexible than a conventional battleship.
Despite being marketed as a torpedo battleship, her main battery should remain the focus of the build. It's recommended to invest in the guns because they account for the majority of her damage output. The torpedoes are an important secondary tool, but they should not dictate how you build the captain.
Karl XIV Johan's concealment is one of her biggest advantages. Her low detectability allows her to approach enemy ships without immediately revealing her position and gives her more opportunities to disengage when an engagement becomes unfavorable. Use this stealth to control when fights begin rather than simply sailing forward and trading damage.
The 305mm guns have a relatively fast 25-second reload, allowing Karl XIV Johan to maintain pressure even though each individual salvo is less powerful than those of battleships carrying larger-caliber guns. Her 19.07 km base firing range also gives her enough reach to contribute from medium and longer distances.
The optional secondary build is tempting because Karl XIV Johan's concealment is so good. A German-style setup can bring the secondary range close to the ship's detection range, creating opportunities for surprise attacks. However, the current community guide notes that this setup produces worse average performance than focusing on the main battery.
Her torpedoes are best treated as a close-range finishing tool rather than the ship's primary weapon. Their long range gives you flexibility, but the ship's relatively low HP pool means reckless torpedo rushes can quickly become expensive. Use the torpedoes when an enemy has already committed to a close fight or when terrain allows you to approach safely.
Hydroacoustic Search also makes Karl XIV Johan well suited to fighting around islands and in contested areas. It improves awareness of nearby ships and torpedoes, allowing you to use your concealment and mobility more aggressively without blindly entering dangerous positions.
The ship is most effective when played as a mobile mid-range battleship. Keep moving between useful firing positions, use concealment to disengage when necessary and look for opportunities to close the distance only after the enemy has been weakened. Karl XIV Johan does not need to win through raw armor or HP when she can dictate the terms of the engagement.
Overall, build Karl XIV Johan around her main battery and treat the torpedoes as an additional weapon rather than the core of the ship. Her exceptional concealment gives you the freedom to choose fights, while her guns provide the reliable damage needed throughout the battle. The secondary setup can be fun, but the main battery build is the stronger all-around choice.
