German BB Schlieffen Line - Standard Captain Build

The German Schlieffen line is built around one defining concept: combining excellent concealment with an exceptionally powerful secondary battery. From Von der Tann through Schlieffen, these battlecruisers are designed to become increasingly dangerous as they close the distance, while their mobility and concealment help them choose when that engagement begins.
The standard build is tailored specifically around maximizing secondary firepower and concealment. This allows the ships to get surprisingly close to enemy formations before committing to the fight.
IFHE is a key part of the build because it increases the penetration of the secondary battery to 32mm. This allows the 105mm secondaries to deal direct damage against common battleship armor rather than relying primarily on fires. Brisk is a reasonable alternative if you prefer more speed while remaining undetected, but the current build considers IFHE the stronger overall choice.
If you find that enemy fire frequently destroys your secondary mounts before the fight develops, Preventive Maintenance can replace Demolition Expert. This sacrifices some fire-starting potential in exchange for improving the durability of the modules that make the Schlieffen line so dangerous at close range.
Prinz Heinrich is the main exception to the specialized build. If you are creating a dedicated captain specifically for her, a standard battleship tank build is perfectly viable instead of investing heavily into the complete secondary setup.
Lütjens is highly recommended because his secondary talent fits the line particularly well. His bonuses become especially valuable once the battle reaches the ranges where the German battlecruisers can keep their secondary batteries firing continuously.
The Schlieffen line should not be played as a collection of ships that simply press W toward the nearest enemy. Their concealment is one of their greatest advantages, so use it to approach without revealing your intentions too early. Pick a flank, watch the enemy deployment and look for the point where you can enter secondary range without being focused by the entire opposing team.
Once the engagement begins, the combination of main guns, secondaries and torpedoes can create enormous close-range pressure. The objective is to isolate targets whenever possible, allowing the secondary battery to work continuously while limiting the number of enemy ships that can concentrate fire on you.
Hydroacoustic Search is particularly important during these pushes. It helps detect incoming torpedoes and nearby ships, giving you additional information when fighting around islands, objectives and confined areas. Hydro is one of the reasons the German battlecruisers can operate aggressively without having to blindly commit into every close-range engagement.
Hydroacoustic Search Modification is therefore preferred in the relevant upgrade slot. If you do not have the modification, Damage Control System Modification 1 is the straightforward fallback.
Concealment should be treated as an offensive tool, not just a defensive statistic. A lower detection range allows you to approach an enemy battleship or cruiser before opening fire, reducing the distance that must be covered while under incoming fire. This is particularly valuable for a line whose main source of damage comes from close-range secondary fire.
At the same time, do not throw away your HP simply because you have strong secondary batteries. The Schlieffen line is excellent at close range, but several enemy ships firing simultaneously can still overwhelm even a well-built battlecruiser. Wait for enemy ships to become occupied, isolated or weakened before making your most aggressive pushes.
As the battle progresses, the value of the build generally increases. Once destroyers and cruisers have been eliminated or weakened, there are fewer threats capable of preventing you from closing the distance. This is when the combination of concealment, secondaries, torpedoes and German Hydro can become particularly difficult for the remaining enemy ships to deal with.
The key to the Schlieffen line is controlled aggression. Use concealment to approach, choose the engagement carefully and let the secondaries do sustained damage once you are inside their effective range. Hydro helps manage torpedoes and close-range threats, while the main battery provides additional burst damage when targets expose themselves.
Overall, the Schlieffen line is a specialized German battlecruiser branch built around stealth and secondary combat. Get close without being detected too early, isolate targets, use Hydro to manage torpedo threats and commit only when the enemy cannot easily focus you down. The standard build is designed to maximize exactly those strengths.
