Destroyer - Poland Tier IX Błyskawica ’44 - Captain & Gunboat Build
- Build focus: Open-water AP gunboat with improved penetration angles and high mobility
- Main strengths: Improved AP angles, Repair Party, Hydroacoustic Search and enhanced Engine Boost
- Main weakness: No HE or Smoke Generator makes positioning and open-water dodging essential
- Captain build: Standard gunboat DD build with Extra Heavy AP Shells
- Damage option: Trade Concealment Expert for Fearless Brawler for maximum damage farming
- Gun range: Extra range is generally not worthwhile because AP cannot start fires and has limited penetration
- Speed Boost: If Speed Boost Modification 1 is unavailable, use Engine Room Protection
- Torpedoes: 12 km torpedoes provide a useful alternative against bow-in targets
- Applies to: Błyskawica ’44
Błyskawica ’44 is an unusual Polish destroyer that abandons the flexibility normally provided by HE and Smoke in favor of a dedicated open-water AP gunboat playstyle. Her improved AP penetration angles, Repair Party, Hydroacoustic Search and enhanced speed boost give her the tools to remain dangerous in open water, but the lack of Smoke Generator makes mistakes considerably more expensive.
The ship's AP is the centerpiece of the build. With penetration angles of roughly 60–75 degrees, Błyskawica ’44 can continue dealing meaningful damage against targets that would be difficult for a conventional AP destroyer to punish. Broadside cruisers are particularly attractive targets, and the improved angles allow the ship to maintain AP pressure over a wider range of target angles. Completely bow-in ships remain a problem, however, so do not expect the improved angles to turn unfavorable targets into easy damage.
Extra Heavy AP Shells are particularly valuable because Błyskawica ’44 has no HE ammunition at all. Every gun engagement therefore revolves around making the AP work. Rather than investing heavily into additional gun range, the build prioritizes improving the effectiveness of the ammunition you actually use. Extra range also provides limited benefit when you cannot set fires, making it generally less attractive for a dedicated damage-farming setup.
Early in the battle, look for opportunities to engage enemy destroyers. Błyskawica ’44 has the firepower to make these encounters highly favorable when you can establish the right angle and maintain your mobility. After the main DD threats have been reduced, transition toward farming larger ships by targeting their more lightly armored sections, particularly the superstructure and other areas where your AP can continue to penetrate.
Open-water maneuvering is the key to staying alive. Because Błyskawica ’44 has no smoke to break line of sight, your primary defensive tool is movement. The enhanced speed boost allows you to constantly change your position, speed and direction while making enemy shells miss. Repair Party can recover damage, but it should not be treated as the main survival mechanism. The best way to preserve your hit points is to avoid taking unnecessary damage in the first place.
Conserve the Speed Boost for situations where it can directly improve your survival or help you win an important engagement. Activating it simply for faster travel can leave you without the mobility advantage when you are suddenly targeted by several enemy ships. In a ship without smoke, having that acceleration and speed available at the right moment can make the difference between escaping and being sent back to port.
Bow-in ships are among the most frustrating targets for Błyskawica ’44. The same applies to heavily armored secondary-focused ships that can punish you for fighting too close. When an enemy presents an unfavorable angle, consider switching targets or using the ship's torpedoes instead of wasting salvo after salvo against armor that your AP cannot reliably overcome.
The 12 km torpedoes are deceptively useful for a ship that otherwise appears to be entirely gun-focused. They are particularly valuable against enemies that sit bow-in and refuse to give your AP a useful broadside. Launching torpedoes into predictable positions can force these ships to maneuver, potentially creating the broadside angle you need to return to gunfire.
Players coming from the standard Błyskawica should keep in mind that Błyskawica ’44 is a fundamentally different ship. Her AP-only ammunition, lack of smoke and open-water focus require a much more deliberate approach to positioning and target selection. She also plays differently from the Błyskawica ’52, so experience with either of those ships should not automatically translate into the same tactics here.
For a more aggressive damage-farming setup, Concealment Expert can be exchanged for Fearless Brawler. This sacrifices some concealment in exchange for greater offensive potential, reinforcing the open-water gunboat identity of Błyskawica ’44. The result is a demanding but rewarding destroyer that relies on positioning, aim and constant movement rather than smoke farming to survive.
