Destroyer - Italy Tier IX Paolo Emilio - Yolo Torpedo Rush Build
- Build focus: A specialized Yolo Emilio build designed around Paolo Emilio's devastating close-range torpedo rush.
- Playstyle: Use concealment, islands, Exhaust Smoke and Engine Boost to close the distance before launching a point-blank torpedo attack.
- Torpedoes: Paolo Emilio's torpedoes have extremely high damage but short range, making them most effective during close-range attacks rather than conventional torpedo screening.
- RPF: Radio Location helps track enemy destroyers and locate the intended target when it disappears during the approach.
- Consumables: Exhaust Smoke Generator and Engine Boost are essential to the rush strategy and should not be replaced with alternative setups.
- Adrenaline Rush: Useful when fighting enemy destroyers during the approach, although Consumables Specialist can be considered for additional consumable uptime.
- Target selection: Isolated, distracted and unaware ships are the ideal targets. Prepared enemy groups, Radar ships and enemy destroyers can quickly turn a torpedo rush into a suicide run.
- HP management: Avoid unnecessary early damage because Paolo Emilio needs enough HP to survive the incoming fire during the final approach.
- Applies to: IX Paolo Emilio.
Paolo Emilio is one of the most unconventional destroyers in World of Warships. Rather than using her torpedoes from normal engagement ranges, the ship is built around an extreme close-range attack: accelerate toward an isolated target under Exhaust Smoke, survive the final approach and release enough torpedoes at point-blank range to destroy the target before escaping.
This playstyle is possible because Paolo Emilio combines several characteristics that are unusual for a destroyer. She has high survivability, very high speed and access to both Exhaust Smoke Generator and Engine Boost. The trade-off is equally important: her torpedoes have short range and her concealment is very poor. The ship therefore cannot play like a conventional stealth torpedo destroyer.
The torpedoes are the centerpiece of the build. Paolo Emilio's torpedoes can deal 23,767 maximum damage each, but their short range forces the ship to get extremely close to the target. This is why the build is fundamentally different from a standard Italian destroyer setup: the objective is not to launch torpedoes safely from distance, but to turn the entire ship into a delivery system for a devastating close-range strike.
Exhaust Smoke Generator is what allows Paolo Emilio to make this approach possible. Unlike conventional smoke, the consumable allows the ship to remain concealed while maintaining high speed. Engine Boost then provides the additional acceleration and top-speed advantage required to shorten the final distance to the target.
The approach itself is often more important than the torpedo launch. Use islands and terrain to hide the initial movement and avoid activating the consumables too early. The ideal target is an isolated ship that is distracted by another engagement and has limited opportunity to react. Once the approach is committed, activate Smoke and speed boost for the final sprint.
Radio Location is particularly useful for this style because losing sight of the target during a rush can completely ruin the attack. RPF provides directional information that helps maintain the correct approach angle and can also reveal where an enemy destroyer is positioned relative to Paolo Emilio.
Enemy destroyers are one of the biggest threats to the strategy. A DD that detects Paolo Emilio early can force her to spend valuable HP before reaching the intended target. Radar presents a similar problem because it can expose the ship during the approach, removing the concealment advantage provided by Exhaust Smoke. Whenever possible, avoid rushing prepared enemy positions containing Radar or healthy enemy destroyers.
Health management is another critical part of the Yolo Emilio build. The temptation is to take every available opportunity for an early engagement, but unnecessary damage can make the eventual torpedo rush impossible. Paolo Emilio needs enough HP to absorb the return fire during the final approach, particularly when rushing a healthy battleship or large cruiser.
A useful rule when selecting targets is to consider how many torpedo racks are actually required. One rack is generally sufficient for a standard cruiser or a heavily damaged large cruiser or battleship. A healthy battleship or large cruiser may require two racks, while a healthy super battleship or Yimeng-class target can require all three racks to guarantee the kill.
The main battery is secondary to the torpedo rush in this build. Paolo Emilio's eight 135 mm guns have a relatively long 10.7-second reload, so they are not intended to compete with dedicated gunboat destroyers in sustained DPM. They are nevertheless useful when finishing damaged targets or dealing with enemy destroyers that interfere with the approach.
Adrenaline Rush provides additional value when Paolo Emilio is forced into a gun engagement, although Consumables Specialist is a reasonable alternative if the priority is maximizing the availability of the consumables that make the rush possible. The specialized upgrades should not be replaced casually, because the entire build depends on getting the maximum value from Smoke and Engine Boost during the attack.
The biggest mistake with Paolo Emilio is treating every enemy ship as a potential Yolo target. The gimmick works extremely well when the opponent is isolated, distracted or unaware, but experienced players can deliberately prepare for the attack. A coordinated group, Radar coverage or a healthy enemy destroyer can turn the same rush into a one-way trip.
The Yolo Emilio build is therefore a high-risk, high-reward setup built around timing rather than conventional destroyer fundamentals. Mask the approach, identify an isolated target, preserve enough HP for the final sprint and commit only when the enemy cannot effectively respond. When everything lines up, Paolo Emilio can turn a single attack into one of the most spectacular dev strikes available to a destroyer.
