Destroyer - Germany Tier IX ZF-6 - Captain & Gunboat Build
- Build focus: A gunboat build centered around ZF-6's improved AP shells and Main Battery Reload Booster.
- Playstyle: Use ZF-6 as an aggressive destroyer hunter, looking for close-range opportunities to overwhelm vulnerable DDs with AP and MBRB.
- AP shells: Improved 60°-67.5° ricochet angles and a very short fuse make ZF-6's AP particularly effective against lightly armored targets.
- Main Battery Reload Booster: MBRB provides a short window of dramatically increased gun output and should be used when an enemy destroyer is exposed or vulnerable.
- Main battery: Five 128 mm guns reload in 3.8 seconds normally, providing strong AP DPM even outside the MBRB window.
- HE shells: ZF-6 has significantly lower HE DPM than AP DPM, making AP the preferred ammunition whenever the target's armor and angle allow reliable penetration.
- Late-game option: Trade BFT for Superintendent if additional consumable availability is more valuable than maximum gun DPM during the later stages of a battle.
- Consumables: Smoke Generator and Engine Boost support aggressive positioning, while Defensive AA Fire provides additional utility against aircraft.
- Applies to: IX ZF-6 and IX ZF-6 Golden.
ZF-6 is a German destroyer with an unusual French influence, combining a relatively conventional destroyer hull with exceptionally strong AP ammunition and a Main Battery Reload Booster. The result is a ship that is at its most dangerous when it can force a short, decisive gun engagement against a vulnerable target.
The AP is the defining feature of the ship. ZF-6's 128 mm AP shells have improved ricochet angles, beginning to ricochet at 60° and always ricocheting at 67.5°. Combined with a very short 0.01-second fuse, the shells are particularly well suited to dealing rapid damage to lightly armored targets without relying on HE penetration or fire damage.
This makes enemy destroyers the natural priority for the build. When an opposing DD presents enough vulnerable armor, ZF-6 can switch to AP and use the Main Battery Reload Booster to create a short burst of extremely high damage output. The objective is not to maintain a long gun duel, but to exploit a favorable window and remove a large amount of HP before the opponent can respond effectively.
The Main Battery Reload Booster is therefore best treated as an engagement tool rather than something to activate simply because it is available. Saving it for a destroyer that has been spotted in an exposed position can turn an ordinary gun exchange into a decisive advantage. It is particularly valuable when an enemy DD is already damaged and a short burst can finish the target before it escapes.
Outside the MBRB window, ZF-6 still has a useful main battery. The five 128 mm guns reload in 3.8 seconds, providing strong AP DPM compared with the ship's HE performance. This ammunition difference is important: ZF-6 should not be played like a conventional German destroyer that automatically defaults to HE. Whenever the target is suitable for AP, the AP shells are the weapon that makes the ship special.
The short fuse is particularly useful against lightly armored targets because it reduces the likelihood of shells passing through the target without arming. Combined with the improved ricochet angles, this allows ZF-6 to maintain effective AP damage against targets that are already attempting to angle away from incoming fire.
ZF-6's role is consequently more specialized than that of a traditional all-purpose gunboat. The ship is not simply trying to maximize damage against whatever target is closest. Instead, target selection is central to the build. Look for destroyers and lightly armored ships where AP can consistently penetrate, then use MBRB to maximize the value of the short engagement window.
The ship's Smoke Generator provides the concealment needed to create these engagements, while Engine Boost helps ZF-6 reach favorable positions and disengage when necessary. ZF-6 does not currently have Hydroacoustic Search; the consumable setup includes Smoke, Engine Boost, MBRB and Defensive AA Fire.
For players who want stronger late-game utility, BFT can be exchanged for Superintendent. The additional consumable availability can become increasingly valuable as the battle progresses and surviving ships have fewer tools available. The trade-off is lower passive gun DPM, so the standard BFT setup remains preferable when maximizing damage is the priority.
ZF-6 should avoid treating every destroyer encounter as an invitation to rush forward. The ship's relatively low speed limits its ability to escape bad positions, making it important to establish the engagement before committing. Use concealment and Smoke to control when the fight begins, then exploit the opponent's mistake with AP and MBRB.
The result is a specialized AP-focused destroyer hunter. ZF-6 may look like a conventional German destroyer on the surface, but her improved AP and Main Battery Reload Booster completely change the way her guns should be used. Find vulnerable targets, choose the right moment to engage and unleash the AP burst when the enemy has the least opportunity to escape.
