Destroyer - Europe Tier IX Jäger - Captain & Torpedo Build
- Build focus: A standard torpedo destroyer build centered around Jäger's exceptional concealment and highly spammable torpedoes.
- Playstyle: Use Jäger's stealth to outspot enemy destroyers and continuously launch torpedoes while avoiding direct gunfights.
- Torpedoes: Fast-reloading torpedoes allow Jäger to maintain constant pressure and repeatedly attack predictable enemy movement.
- Concealment: Jäger's excellent concealment can allow her to outspot even dedicated Japanese torpedo destroyers.
- Gunpower: Low gun DPM makes Jäger poorly suited to prolonged destroyer engagements, so avoid unnecessary close-range gunfights.
- Skill option: Trade Radio Location for Superintendent or Swift in Silence if you are confident predicting enemy destroyer movements.
- Survivability option: Fill the Tubes can be exchanged for Superintendent when additional survivability and consumable availability are preferred.
- Captain: Swirski is particularly effective on Jäger because the repeated torpedo hits can quickly activate his improved skills.
- Aircraft threat: Jäger has extremely weak anti-aircraft defenses, making her highly vulnerable to sustained carrier spotting and attacks.
- Upgrade: If Engine Boost Modification 1 is unavailable, use Engine Room Protection instead.
- Applies to: IX Jäger.
Jäger is a dedicated torpedo-spamming destroyer built around two defining characteristics: exceptional concealment and a constant supply of fast-reloading torpedoes. Rather than trying to win fights through gun damage, Jäger uses stealth to remain undetected while repeatedly creating torpedo threats across the battlefield.
The ship's concealment is one of her greatest advantages. Jäger can detect opposing destroyers before they detect her, including many dedicated Japanese torpedo destroyers. This gives her considerable freedom to choose when to engage and when to remain hidden. The advantage is particularly valuable around capture points, where simply knowing the enemy destroyer's position can be more important than immediately opening fire.
Her guns are the major limitation. Low gun DPM means that even a heavily damaged enemy destroyer can be an uncomfortable target. A gunfight that would be routine for a dedicated gunboat can quickly become a losing engagement for Jäger. Whenever possible, use concealment and torpedoes to influence the enemy rather than voluntarily committing to a prolonged artillery duel.
Jäger's torpedoes compensate for this weakness by being available extremely frequently. The ship can repeatedly flood important areas with torpedoes, forcing enemy ships to alter their course and disrupting their ability to push or maintain advantageous positions. This constant threat is often more valuable than a single large torpedo salvo.
Because individual torpedoes deal relatively low damage, staggering launches can be particularly effective. Instead of sending every available torpedo at once, consider spacing out the attacks against suitable targets. A target that successfully avoids one salvo can still be threatened by the next, while repeated hits and potential flooding create additional opportunities to accumulate damage.
Radio Location is useful when operating around enemy destroyers because it provides directional information even when the target remains concealed. However, players who are confident in reading enemy movement can replace RPF with Superintendent or Swift in Silence. This trades some direct information for additional utility or mobility, depending on the preferred playstyle.
For players who want additional survivability and consumable flexibility, Fill the Tubes can be exchanged for Superintendent. This is particularly attractive in battles where Jäger expects to spend a long time spotting and repositioning rather than taking direct fights.
Swirski is an especially strong commander choice for this style because Jäger's high volume of torpedo launches provides many opportunities to trigger improved commander effects as torpedo ribbons begin accumulating. The commander therefore complements the ship's natural tendency toward repeated attacks rather than single decisive salvos.
Aircraft are a major threat to Jäger. Her anti-aircraft capability is extremely limited, meaning a carrier that decides to keep aircraft over the destroyer can make maintaining concealment very difficult. When operating in a carrier battle, use terrain and friendly AA coverage whenever possible and avoid unnecessarily exposing the ship simply to gain another torpedo launch opportunity.
Jäger is most effective when she can remain unpredictable. Launch torpedoes from concealment, change position before the enemy can determine your location and use the ship's excellent detection advantage to stay one step ahead of opposing destroyers. The objective is to make the enemy react to threats they cannot easily trace back to their source.
The result is a straightforward but highly effective torpedo-spamming destroyer. Jäger does not need high individual torpedo alpha or strong guns when she can repeatedly put fast torpedoes into the water while remaining extremely difficult to detect. Play around concealment, avoid unnecessary gunfights and use staggered torpedo attacks to turn repeated hits and flooding into sustained battlefield pressure.
