Strategy Guide. The Cayuga Anti-Cruiser Build
This alternative Cayuga build focuses specifically on farming enemy cruisers with her rapid-firing 102 mm guns. IFHE increases the ship's HE penetration to 31 mm, allowing her shells to penetrate the majority of cruiser armor encountered at high tiers rather than relying primarily on hitting thinner bow, stern and superstructure sections.
The trade-off is significant: IFHE increases penetration but reduces the base fire chance of the HE shells. Demolition Expert is therefore included to partially recover the lost fire-starting capability. The result is a build that sacrifices some of Cayuga's effectiveness against battleships in exchange for much more reliable direct HE damage against cruisers.
This makes the build particularly useful for players who frequently find themselves fighting cruisers. Instead of watching shells shatter against thicker cruiser plating, Cayuga can consistently penetrate much more of the target's hull. Some heavily armored cruisers can still present difficult targets, so target selection remains important.
IFHE and Cruiser Farming
Cayuga's standard HE penetration is 25 mm. IFHE increases HE penetration by 25%, with the resulting value rounded down, giving this build the 31 mm penetration threshold. The skill also halves the ship's base fire chance, which is why Demolition Expert becomes an important part of the anti-cruiser setup.
Against cruisers, the difference is straightforward: instead of concentrating your fire only on areas with thinner armor, you can aim at larger portions of the hull and generate consistent penetration damage. This is especially useful when a cruiser is angled enough to make superstructure farming less reliable but still has sections of armor within Cayuga's penetration threshold.
The downside becomes more apparent when fighting battleships. Fires are an important part of Cayuga's normal damage-farming potential, and the reduced fire chance from IFHE makes prolonged battleship farming less attractive. If your battles are dominated by battleship damage farming rather than cruiser engagements, the standard Cayuga build is likely to be more suitable.
For a more general-purpose setup, see the Cayuga Standard Build. The standard build gives up the specialized 31 mm penetration in exchange for a more balanced combination of gun damage, utility and fire-starting potential.
Crawling Smoke Management
Cayuga's Crawling Smoke Generator is particularly powerful for this playstyle because it allows her to maintain concealment while moving at up to one-quarter speed. This makes it possible to stay close to enemy cruisers and continuously farm them while remaining difficult to target accurately. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
The important detail is that the smoke can be stopped manually. The base smoke duration is around 4 minutes and 10 seconds, but once the generator is deactivated there is a mandatory cooldown before another charge becomes available. Do not turn the smoke off simply because you have temporarily stopped firing. You may need that same consumable for a much more important engagement later in the battle.
Because Cayuga has a relatively small HP pool, Crawling Smoke should be treated as one of the ship's primary defensive resources. Use it to create sustained farming opportunities, but avoid assuming that smoke makes you completely safe. Enemy ships can blind-fire the smoke, torpedoes can still reach your position, and once the consumable is on cooldown your ability to sustain an aggressive engagement is reduced.
How to Play the Anti-Cruiser Build
The ideal target is a cruiser that needs to remain within Cayuga's gun range. Use concealment and positioning to approach from an unexpected direction, then activate Crawling Smoke once you are ready to establish a sustained firing position. The combination of 31 mm HE penetration and rapid reload allows Cayuga to steadily remove cruiser HP without depending entirely on fires.
Avoid taking unnecessary early-game trades with enemy destroyers. Cayuga can fight other destroyers effectively, but her low HP pool makes aggressive DD trades expensive. This build is designed to capitalize on cruiser targets, so preserving health for the mid and late game can provide much greater value.
Once the enemy destroyers are dealt with or pushed away, Cayuga can become an extremely annoying cruiser farmer. Look for isolated targets, use islands and smoke to limit incoming fire, and maintain enough distance to disengage if multiple enemy ships begin focusing your position.
Engine Boost Modification remains the preferred upgrade for this specialized build because Cayuga needs mobility to choose her engagements and escape when the enemy reacts. If the Engine Boost Modification is unavailable, Engine Room Protection is a suitable alternative.
The anti-cruiser Cayuga is therefore a specialized alternative rather than a universal replacement for the standard build. IFHE turns her into a much more reliable direct-damage platform against cruisers, while Demolition Expert partially compensates for the lost fire chance. Choose this version when cruiser farming is a priority; otherwise, the Standard Cayuga Build remains the more flexible option.
