Cruiser - U.S.S.R. Tier V-VIII Bagration, Molotov, Kirov & Mikoyan
Captain & Ship Build and Strategy Guide
- Build focus: Main battery performance, HE penetration, range and long-range damage farming
- Playstyle: Long-range open-water cruiser with kiting and selective AP usage
- Primary ammunition: HE for angled targets and AP against broadside cruisers
- Recommended skill: Heavy HE Shells (HHE) to improve the effectiveness of the low-DPM HE guns
- HHE alternative: Drop HHE and Demolition Expert if you dislike the increased firing detection range
- Alternative skills: Replace HHE/DE with Top Grade Gunner or quality-of-life skills such as Incoming Fire Alert and Expert Marksman
- HAP: Not recommended because the 180 mm guns do not meet the required caliber threshold
- Survivability: Superintendent can be useful for the shared build across all four ships
- Kirov/Molotov option: If the build is dedicated to Kirov or Molotov, Superintendent can be replaced with other preferred skills
- Best targets: Broadside cruisers, destroyers and vulnerable battleship sections
- Key strength: Excellent shell velocity and long-range gun performance
- Key weakness: Large detection range and relatively low HE DPM
- Applies to: U.S.S.R. Tier VIII Bagration, Tier VI Molotov, Tier V Kirov and Tier V Mikoyan
Bagration, Molotov, Kirov and Mikoyan form a natural group for a shared Soviet 180 mm cruiser build. Although they occupy different tiers, they share the same fundamental philosophy: fast shells, excellent long-range accuracy and heavy individual salvoes combined with relatively poor sustained HE damage. The result is a group of cruisers that rewards careful positioning and deliberate target selection rather than simply maximizing rate of fire.
Heavy HE Shells is particularly attractive for this group because the main battery already struggles to produce high sustained HE damage. Increasing HE penetration makes more of the available armor sections viable targets and allows the guns to generate more reliable direct damage. The downside is increased firing detection range, which means the skill is not mandatory for captains who prefer a more conservative concealment-focused playstyle.
If the additional detection range from HHE makes you uncomfortable, dropping both HHE and Demolition Expert is a perfectly reasonable alternative. The freed skill points can instead be invested into Top Grade Gunner or a combination of quality-of-life skills such as Incoming Fire Alert and Expert Marksman. This produces a less specialized build while avoiding the additional detection penalty.
Heavy AP Shells is not a useful replacement for HHE on these ships. Their 180 mm guns do not meet the caliber requirement for the skill, so the build should concentrate on the tools that actually improve the way these cruisers fight. The important distinction is that HHE improves the practical effectiveness of the guns you already have, while HAP would provide no benefit to this particular caliber.
The basic gameplay is long-range damage farming. These ships have excellent shell velocity, making it possible to consistently hit targets at ranges where many cruisers struggle to land accurate salvos. This allows the captain to maintain distance from battleships while still contributing meaningful damage to the fight.
The large detection-to-range buffer is one of the defining characteristics of this group. You can fire from considerably farther away than you can remain undetected, so firing inevitably exposes the cruiser. The solution is not to avoid firing; it is to understand which enemy ships are currently capable of returning fire and to make sure you have enough distance and maneuvering room before opening up.
Open-water kiting is therefore an important part of the playstyle. Keep the ship moving, vary your speed and course, and avoid sailing in a predictable straight line. Your fast shells allow you to maintain pressure while maneuvering, while the distance gives you more time to react to incoming battleship salvos.
AP is particularly valuable against broadside cruisers. The Soviet 180 mm guns have strong AP penetration and excellent shell velocity, making them very dangerous when an enemy cruiser exposes its side. Bagration is especially effective in this role, with 180 mm AP capable of dealing heavy damage to broadside targets while benefiting from improved ricochet angles.
Against angled cruisers and battleships, HE becomes the more consistent ammunition choice. The HHE build makes this option considerably more practical by increasing the number of armor sections that can be penetrated directly. Do not become overly focused on starting fires; with these ships, reliable direct HE damage is often more valuable than waiting for repeated fire opportunities.
Molotov and Kirov demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of the concept particularly clearly. Both use 180 mm guns with excellent ballistics and heavy AP, but their weak armor and poor maneuverability make close-range engagements extremely dangerous. Molotov, for example, has a 15.49 km base range and 12.5-second reload, while the Wiki specifically lists weak armor and poor maneuverability among her drawbacks.
Mikoyan follows the same philosophy at Tier V. Her 180 mm guns have a 16.2 km range and 11-second reload, with high shell velocity and long-range accuracy listed among her strengths. At the same time, poor survivability and concealment make positioning especially important.
Bagration is the higher-tier version of this concept, combining nine 180 mm guns with an 18.48 km firing range. Her 11-second reload still produces relatively low DPM, but the long range and excellent AP characteristics allow her to punish targets from positions where many cruisers cannot respond effectively.
The opening phase should be conservative. Do not rush toward the frontline simply because your guns have the range to participate. Identify the enemy battleships first and determine which directions their guns are facing. Your ideal position is one where you can fire on enemy cruisers and battleships while having enough open water to maneuver when the return fire arrives.
Enemy cruisers should generally be high-priority targets. A broadside cruiser gives these guns exactly what they want: a large target with a vulnerable side and predictable movement. Use AP whenever the angle is favorable and aim carefully at the main belt or citadel area. The combination of high shell velocity and heavy AP damage can produce devastating results.
Destroyers are more difficult because these cruisers do not have the rapid reload of dedicated light cruisers. If a destroyer is spotted inside your effective range, take the shot when the target's movement is predictable, but do not chase it into dangerous territory. One accurate salvo can be extremely valuable, but losing your cruiser while attempting to finish a destroyer is rarely worthwhile.
Against battleships, distance is your primary defensive tool. Use HE against angled targets and vulnerable superstructure sections, while switching to AP whenever a battleship presents a sufficiently favorable side. The objective is to continuously generate damage without allowing the battleship to dictate the engagement range.
The high detection range also makes disengagement important. If several enemy ships begin focusing you, stop firing and use the opportunity to disappear. Continuing to fire simply because the guns are loaded can expose you to another battleship salvo. These cruisers have enough range that there is usually little reason to remain in a bad position just to squeeze out one additional shot.
Superintendent can be useful when using this as a universal build across Bagration, Molotov, Kirov and Mikoyan. However, if the commander is dedicated specifically to Kirov or Molotov, there is less reason to preserve the skill purely for compatibility. Those ships can instead use the points for whichever combination of firepower, maneuverability or quality-of-life skills best matches your preferred playstyle.
Mid-game is where these cruisers can start moving closer to the action. Once some of the enemy battleships have been destroyed or committed to another flank, the risk of being instantly focused decreases. Use that opportunity to improve your firing angles and support allied ships without becoming unnecessarily exposed.
Kiting becomes particularly effective when an enemy flank begins pushing. Turn away before the enemy gets too close, maintain distance and continue firing while retreating. A pursuing cruiser that gives broadside can become an excellent AP target, while a battleship can be kept under constant HE pressure as it attempts to close the distance.
Do not rely on torpedoes as a primary weapon. Where available, they are best treated as an emergency defensive tool against enemies that have already committed to a close-range attack. Your guns are the reason to play these ships, and the safest strategy is normally to prevent the enemy from reaching torpedo range in the first place.
In the late game, the combination of long range and heavy individual salvos becomes increasingly dangerous. With fewer enemy guns available to punish you, you can gradually reduce the engagement distance and make better use of AP against isolated cruisers. Preserve your hit points throughout the early and mid-game so that you can take advantage of these opportunities later.
The biggest mistake with these Soviet 180 mm cruisers is trying to compensate for their low DPM by playing too aggressively. They are not designed to win sustained close-range damage races. Their advantage is the ability to deliver accurate, heavy salvos from range and then reposition before the enemy can punish them.
Overall, Bagration, Molotov, Kirov and Mikoyan reward the same fundamental skills: accurate gunnery, ammunition discipline, open-water maneuvering and careful positioning. Heavy HE Shells is an excellent choice for improving their otherwise weak HE performance, while captains who dislike the associated detection penalty can use the points elsewhere. Keep your distance, punish broadside cruisers with AP and use your long-range guns to farm damage without giving the enemy an easy shot.
