Kozma Mininis a Tier IX Soviet premium cruiser that takes the general concept of Donskoi and changes the emphasis toward heavier guns and stronger performance against large, heavily armored targets. Instead of the 180 mm battery associated with Donskoi, Kozma Minin carries eight 203 mm guns with a 9.5-second reload and 18.5 km firing range. The result is a fast-firing heavy cruiser that can operate comfortably at long range while still bringing useful Radar utility to the battlefield.
The biggest difference from Donskoi is the main battery caliber. The 203 mm guns give Kozma Minin access to 51 mm HE penetration, which is one of the defining reasons to choose the ship. This allows the cruiser to deal direct HE damage against armor sections that would resist standard cruiser HE, giving her significantly more reliable performance against heavily armored battleships and cruisers.
The trade-off is that Kozma Minin's individual shells deal less damage than the 180 mm guns used by Donskoi, but the faster reload compensates by allowing more frequent salvos. The result is a ship that feels less like a specialist cruiser hunter and more like a versatile long-range damage farmer that can steadily pressure almost any target.
The recommended captain build follows the Nevsky line. There is little reason to create a completely separate commander setup when the existing Russian high-tier cruiser build already emphasizes the same fundamentals: main-battery performance, survivability, concealment and the ability to operate effectively from range.
Kozma Minin's 18.5 km base gun range makes long-range positioning particularly attractive. The ship can contribute damage without immediately entering the most dangerous engagement distances, while the 925 m/s shell velocity makes it easier to hit moving targets compared with many other heavy cruisers.
Open-water kiting should therefore be the default approach. Maintain a distance where enemy battleships have enough difficulty consistently landing hits, then constantly vary your speed and direction. Kozma Minin has a relatively small HP pool for a Tier IX cruiser, so taking unnecessary return fire can quickly become expensive.
The ship's high shell velocity also makes long-range farming more comfortable against cruisers. A target attempting to angle or dodge may still be hit consistently, while the 203 mm HE provides reliable damage against sections that smaller-caliber cruiser guns cannot penetrate.
HE should generally be the default ammunition against battleships and angled targets. The 51 mm penetration is the key advantage, allowing Kozma Minin to deal direct damage to heavily armored sections rather than relying exclusively on fires. AP remains valuable when a cruiser gives you enough broadside for the shells to penetrate effectively.
The 12 km Surveillance Radar is another major part of the ship's identity. The relatively long range allows Kozma Minin to influence capture points without having to move directly into them, making her particularly useful for supporting allied destroyers. The current Radar duration is 25 seconds.
Radar should be used opportunistically rather than simply on cooldown. A destroyer attempting to capture, a DD hiding behind an island or an enemy ship preparing to make an aggressive push can all provide excellent Radar opportunities. The goal is to expose the enemy at a moment when your team can actually punish the detection.
Radar Modification 1 is the preferred upgrade for players who want to emphasize this anti-DD role. A longer Radar action time provides more opportunity for allied ships to damage the detected target and makes each activation more threatening around objectives.
Engine Boost Modification 1 is the alternative for players who care more about personal damage farming and open-water mobility. Engine Boost increases both engine power and top speed, allowing Kozma Minin to reposition more quickly and making her more effective when dodging incoming fire in open water.
If neither Radar Modification 1 nor Engine Boost Modification 1 is available, Engine Room Protection provides the practical fallback. Kozma Minin relies on mobility and maneuvering to stay alive, so preventing an engine or steering incapacitation can be more valuable than simply accepting the loss of a key movement tool during a fight.
The ship's overall gameplay is very similar to Donskoi in terms of engagement philosophy. Both cruisers are comfortable at range, use mobility to avoid incoming fire and can provide Radar support when destroyers become important targets. The important difference is target specialization: Donskoi is more comfortable fighting destroyers, while Kozma Minin is better suited to battleships and heavily armored targets.
This difference comes directly from the 203 mm battery. Kozma Minin's 51 mm HE penetration allows her to farm large ships more effectively, while the heavier shells also provide a more meaningful AP threat against broadside cruisers. As a result, she should usually spend more time farming larger targets than trying to force destroyer engagements.
The opening minutes should be played conservatively. Establish a long-range position where you can support your team while watching enemy deployment. Avoid pushing into the enemy formation simply because the ship has 12 km Radar. Your Radar is most useful when the cruiser survives long enough to use it repeatedly.
When an enemy destroyer enters Radar range, consider whether your team can actually capitalize on the detection. If several allied ships are positioned to fire, use Radar and punish the destroyer. If the enemy DD is likely to escape behind cover with no meaningful damage taken, saving the consumable for a more important moment can be the better decision.
Against battleships, Kozma Minin should lean heavily on her HE penetration. The 51 mm value means you can directly damage many heavily armored sections that would otherwise require fires to generate meaningful damage. Maintain distance and continuously farm while using movement to make return fire difficult.
Battleships are also useful because they provide predictable movement. A large target sailing at a steady angle is much easier to hit consistently than a destroyer making frequent course changes. Kozma Minin's high shell velocity makes this even more effective, allowing you to maintain pressure from long range without requiring excessive lead.
Against cruisers, AP becomes increasingly valuable whenever the target gives enough broadside. The 203 mm AP shells deal up to 5,900 damage and travel at the same 925 m/s velocity as the HE shells. A cruiser attempting to disengage can therefore become a high-value target if it exposes its side while turning.
Do not, however, become fixated on hunting cruisers. If an enemy cruiser remains heavily angled, return to HE or move your attention to a more vulnerable target. Kozma Minin's strength is the ability to deal reliable damage across a variety of targets rather than depending on one particular matchup.
Destroyer engagements should be approached with similar discipline. Radar gives you the ability to expose them, but the ship's relatively large detection radius means that a close-range DD engagement can quickly become dangerous. Use allied ships to create the crossfire and let your 203 mm guns punish the destroyer when the opportunity appears.
The ship's high top speed is useful not only for repositioning but also for survival. When several enemy ships begin focusing you, use Engine Boost if available and start creating distance. Change course and speed frequently rather than attempting to tank the incoming fire with the hull. Kozma Minin is much more effective when her HP is preserved for the later stages of the battle.
A key part of the strategy is recognizing when to stop firing. Because Kozma Minin has a high detectability range, continuous gunfire can leave her exposed to a large portion of the enemy team. If the number of ships targeting you becomes excessive, disengage, wait for concealment and relocate. The ship has enough range to start applying pressure again from a different position.
Mid-game is where Kozma Minin's versatility becomes more valuable. Once enemy positions are established and some of the fleet has been eliminated, use the gaps between ships to create new firing angles. A good position allows you to farm battleships while retaining the option of using Radar against destroyers if they attempt to contest an objective.
The ship should generally avoid pushing too early. Her relatively low HP pool means an aggressive mistake can remove a large portion of your late-game potential. Wait until the enemy has been sufficiently weakened before committing to a closer position. This is particularly important when facing battleship-heavy lineups.
In the late game, Kozma Minin becomes increasingly dangerous because isolated targets are much easier to punish. The long gun range allows her to attack from safety, while the 12 km Radar becomes more influential as destroyers become increasingly important to the outcome of the battle.
At this stage, Engine Boost can be used more aggressively to close distance against retreating ships or create the speed needed to dodge return fire. Alternatively, Radar Modification 1 gives the destroyer-hunting setup additional consistency when the remaining enemy DDs are contesting caps or attempting to hide behind islands.
The biggest mistake with Kozma Minin is trying to play her like Donskoi in every situation. While the ships share a similar kiting philosophy, Kozma's 203 mm guns make her more valuable against battleships and heavy cruisers. Use the 51 mm HE penetration to exploit that advantage instead of constantly looking for close-range destroyer fights.
Another mistake is treating Radar as the ship's primary weapon. It is an important tool, but the main battery remains the foundation of Kozma Minin's damage output. A successful game will usually involve far more time farming battleships and cruisers than hunting destroyers, with Radar used selectively when the tactical situation demands it.
Overall, Kozma Minin is a long-range Soviet cruiser that combines Donskoi-style mobility and Radar utility with German-inspired 203 mm guns. Her 51 mm HE penetration makes her particularly effective against battleships and other heavily armored targets, while her high shell velocity and 18.5 km range allow her to farm from a relatively safe distance.
The ideal Kozma Minin captain should stay mobile, maintain distance and allow the enemy to provide the damage opportunities. Farm larger ships with HE, punish broadside cruisers with AP, use Radar when an enemy destroyer can actually be punished, and only push once the opposing fleet has been sufficiently weakened. This turns Kozma Minin into a flexible long-range damage dealer capable of supporting destroyer fights without sacrificing her strength against larger targets.
