Dalian is a Tier IX Pan-Asian premium light cruiser built around an unusually rapid-firing 130 mm main battery, excellent concealment and an Enhanced Smoke Generator. Her ten guns reload every 4.5 seconds, giving her very high theoretical DPM, while the ship's relatively fragile hull and low HE penetration force the captain to rely on positioning and sustained fire rather than direct trades.
The main battery consists of five twin 130 mm turrets with standard cruiser dispersion and excellent 950 m/s shell velocity. This combination makes Dalian's guns comfortable to aim despite the relatively small caliber. The fast shell velocity is particularly useful when engaging maneuvering cruisers and other smaller targets at medium range.
Dalian's standard HE shells have only 22 mm of penetration, which is one of the ship's major limitations. You therefore cannot simply point the guns at any section of a battleship and expect direct damage. Target selection is important, with superstructures, lightly armored sections and cruisers providing more reliable opportunities for consistent HE damage.
The ship's biggest offensive advantage comes from its High-Precision Spotter. Unlike a conventional Spotting Aircraft, this consumable increases both the main battery firing range and accuracy. The current Wiki lists a 10% increase to firing range and a 10% reduction in main-battery dispersion for Dalian's High-Precision Spotter, making it one of the most important tools in the ship's arsenal.
This makes the Spotter Modification particularly valuable. The community build reference strongly recommends maximizing the Spotter because Dalian's accuracy improvement is one of the ship's defining mechanics. If the Spotter modification is unavailable, Main Armaments Modification 1 is the straightforward alternative.
The purpose of the Spotter is not simply to extend Dalian's range for a few minutes of farming. The accuracy improvement also makes the guns more reliable against small or maneuvering targets. Activate it when you have a clear firing opportunity and take advantage of the improved dispersion to maximize the number of shells that land during the active period.
Dalian's Enhanced Smoke Generator is the other defining feature of the ship. The current Wiki lists four Smoke Generator charges, each lasting 30 seconds, with a 110-second cooldown. This gives the cruiser several opportunities throughout the battle to create concealed firing positions and break contact when enemy attention becomes excessive.
Smoke should be used to support Dalian's high DPM rather than encouraging stationary farming. Position yourself where allied ships can provide spotting, then use Smoke to create a temporary window of uninterrupted fire. Keep track of enemy Radar and Hydro before committing to a smoke position because Dalian's fragile hull does not tolerate being caught unexpectedly.
Four Repair Party charges give Dalian considerable longevity compared with many light cruisers. The current Wiki lists four charges as standard, with each charge restoring HP over time. This is a major part of the ship's survivability because the hull itself has low protection and only 27,400 base HP.
The additional heals do not mean that Dalian should intentionally absorb damage. Her armor is weak and the extremities are thin, so concentrated enemy fire can still destroy her quickly. Repair Party is most valuable when used to recover damage after an engagement and keep the ship in the fight long enough to make use of her excellent DPM.
Dalian is therefore best played from medium range. Staying too far away makes the 130 mm shells less comfortable to use against smaller targets and reduces the practical value of the ship's concealment and Smoke Generator. Moving too close exposes the cruiser to the heavy-caliber fire she is least equipped to survive.
Open-water kiting is a useful part of this playstyle. Dalian has a top speed of 33.4 knots, allowing her to create distance while maintaining fire. The combination of speed, concealment and rapid-firing guns can make her extremely frustrating to hit when she varies course and speed instead of sailing predictably.
The opening minutes should focus on identifying safe firing opportunities rather than rushing into the center of the battle. Use concealment to remain close enough to influence the flank, then open fire once an enemy target is exposed. If the enemy immediately turns several guns toward you, stop firing and disappear rather than trying to win a direct trade.
Enemy cruisers are often the best targets because their armor provides more opportunities for Dalian's 130 mm guns to deal direct damage. The high shell velocity makes it easier to hit them at medium range, while Smoke can provide the concealment needed to maintain pressure for several salvos.
Against destroyers, Dalian's rapid reload and fast shells can be extremely effective when the target is spotted. However, do not chase a destroyer into open water simply because you can damage it. The ship's low survivability means that a DD supported by cruisers or battleships can quickly turn the engagement around.
Hydroacoustic Search is no longer part of Dalian's current consumable package, so smoke and concealment become even more important when approaching objectives. The current Wiki lists Damage Control Party, Repair Party and Smoke Generator as the three consumable slots.
Against battleships, target selection is critical because the 22 mm HE penetration cannot directly damage many armored areas. Focus on superstructures and other vulnerable sections while using your high rate of fire to generate fires and accumulate direct damage where possible. Avoid sitting in one exposed position simply to maintain maximum DPM.
Dalian's low individual shell damage means that her performance comes from volume rather than alpha. Her 130 mm HE shells deal 1,800 maximum damage, but ten guns firing every 4.5 seconds can produce a constant stream of shells. This makes sustained target exposure much more important than trying to achieve one large salvo.
This is also why the Spotter's accuracy improvement matters so much. Dalian wants as many shells as possible to connect, and the additional dispersion reduction helps turn the ship's theoretical DPM into more consistent real-world damage. Use the High-Precision Spotter during important firing windows rather than wasting it when no worthwhile target is available.
Smoke and Spotter work particularly well together. A well-timed Spotter activation can give Dalian both better range and better accuracy, while Smoke can keep the cruiser concealed as it fires. This combination is one of the safest ways to exploit the ship's high DPM without exposing the fragile hull to the entire enemy fleet.
When firing from Smoke, always consider the spotting situation. If no allied ship can maintain vision of the target, the guns become much less useful. Avoid wasting a complete Smoke cycle firing blindly or relying on a target that is likely to disappear after only a few seconds.
Dalian's concealment is another major asset. Use it to approach firing positions, disengage after enemy attention increases and relocate between Smoke cycles. The ability to repeatedly disappear prevents the ship from being trapped in a prolonged engagement that its fragile hull cannot support.
Mid-game is generally where Dalian becomes more aggressive. Once the enemy's radar ships and destroyer positions are known, you can identify areas where Smoke and rapid-fire guns can be used safely. A damaged enemy cruiser or battleship that is already focused on another target is an excellent opportunity to push your DPM advantage.
Do not underestimate the value of simply forcing an enemy ship to react. A constant stream of 130 mm fire can make battleships turn away, cruisers abandon positions and destroyers hesitate around objectives. Even when the direct damage is modest, Dalian can create useful battlefield pressure by making exposed positions uncomfortable.
The four Repair Party charges become particularly valuable as the game progresses. If you preserve them early, Dalian can recover from several moderate engagements and continue applying fire throughout the match. This is one of the ship's main advantages over more fragile light cruisers that have to retreat permanently after taking similar damage.
The late game is especially favorable for Dalian because fewer enemy ships means fewer guns capable of focusing her. Her concealment becomes more powerful, while the high DPM becomes easier to exploit against isolated ships. This is the stage where Dalian can safely reduce engagement distances and put sustained fire onto weakened opponents.
The biggest mistake with Dalian is confusing high DPM with high durability. The official Wiki specifically lists low survivability and weak armor among her disadvantages. You should therefore think of every engagement in terms of how long you can safely remain exposed, not how much theoretical damage the guns can produce per minute.
Another mistake is using Smoke without a plan. Dalian's Smoke Generator is one of her strongest tools, but it should create a tactical advantage rather than simply hide the cruiser for a few seconds. Make sure you have spotting support, know where enemy Radar ships are and already have an exit route before activating Smoke.
The same principle applies to the High-Precision Spotter. Because it improves both range and accuracy, the best activation occurs when there is a valuable target that you can continue engaging for much of its duration. Saving the consumable for that moment is usually more effective than activating it immediately at the start of the battle.
Overall, Dalian is a specialized Tier IX Pan-Asian light cruiser built around high DPM, concealment and an Enhanced Smoke Generator. Her 130 mm guns have excellent shell velocity and a rapid 4.5-second reload, while the High-Precision Spotter makes the battery more accurate and extends its effective range.
The ideal Dalian captain plays around short, controlled firing windows. Use concealment to approach, activate the High-Precision Spotter when a valuable target is available, exploit Smoke when enemy attention becomes dangerous and use Repair Party to recover damage between engagements. Her guns may lack penetration and alpha damage, but the combination of accuracy, rate of fire and survivability tools can make Dalian an extremely effective sustained-damage cruiser.
