Francesco Ferruccio is an unusual Italian Tier VII cruiser that combines the long-range firepower of a conventional light cruiser with the distinctive SAP ammunition and Exhaust Smoke found on Italian cruisers. Her eight 152 mm guns are not particularly impressive in terms of sustained rate of fire, but their excellent shell velocity and 17.52 km range make them comfortable to use against targets at distance.
The ship's main offensive tool is SAP. With 3,850 maximum damage and more than 42 mm of penetration, the shells can produce very strong individual hits against targets that give you a suitable angle. The 70-degree ricochet check and 80-degree guaranteed ricochet angles also make SAP considerably more forgiving than conventional AP when targets are not perfectly broadside.
The trade-off is that Francesco Ferruccio does not have impressive sustained DPM. Missing a salvo is more costly than it would be on a rapid-firing light cruiser, so target selection is important. Instead of continuously firing at the first available target, look for enemy ships presenting large, predictable sections of their hull. Accurate SAP salvos can then generate meaningful damage without requiring constant exposure.
The long firing range is one of the ship's biggest advantages. Francesco Ferruccio can contribute to a flank without having to sit directly beside the frontline. This gives the captain more freedom to kite and reposition when enemy battleships begin turning their guns toward the cruiser. Maintaining distance is especially important because the armor is weak and the ship does not have the durability needed for prolonged direct trades.
Exhaust Smoke is the key defensive tool that allows Francesco Ferruccio to play more aggressively than her armor would otherwise permit. Unlike a conventional stationary Smoke Generator, Exhaust Smoke allows the ship to continue moving while remaining concealed. This makes it ideal for disengaging from a collapsing flank, changing position while under pressure or making a risky maneuver without remaining exposed for its entire duration.
Do not waste the smoke simply because you are firing at a target. Francesco Ferruccio's range and concealment already allow her to operate safely from a distance. The smoke becomes much more valuable when the enemy begins focusing you or when you need to cross an exposed area. Preserving it for those moments can keep the ship alive long enough to have a major impact later in the battle.
The opening phase should be played from a supporting position. Use the excellent gun range to identify enemy movements and punish ships that expose themselves, while avoiding positions where multiple battleships can focus you simultaneously. Your objective is not to be the first cruiser into the fight; it is to remain alive while steadily influencing the enemy formation.
Against destroyers, Francesco Ferruccio's SAP can be extremely effective when the target is spotted in a favorable position. The high individual shell damage means that a well-aimed salvo can remove a significant portion of a destroyer's health. However, the low rate of fire means that you should not attempt to hunt destroyers alone. Supporting an allied destroyer or using island cover to reduce the enemy's escape options is much safer.
Cruisers are often the most rewarding targets. Look for ships that are broadside or only lightly angled and aim for the largest available section of their hull. SAP is particularly effective when the target cannot simply angle away from you. If a cruiser begins turning toward you, consider disengaging or switching targets rather than repeatedly firing SAP into an increasingly unfavorable angle.
Against battleships, target selection becomes even more important. SAP can produce reliable damage against appropriate sections, but Francesco Ferruccio should not attempt to win a direct exchange with a battleship. Work from range, target vulnerable areas and use the ship's mobility and Exhaust Smoke to disengage when the battleship begins focusing you.
Torpedoes provide an additional layer of protection when an enemy decides to close the distance. They are especially useful around islands and narrow passages where an advancing battleship or cruiser has limited room to maneuver. Do not actively seek close-range fights just because the torpedoes are available. Their greatest value often comes from making an enemy reconsider a push.
Francesco Ferruccio's low detectability should be used as an engagement-control tool. Fire when you have a worthwhile target, then be prepared to stop firing and disappear when the enemy focus becomes excessive. The combination of concealment and Exhaust Smoke gives you several ways to break contact, so there is little reason to continue trading hit points after the tactical situation has turned against you.
Mid-game is the ideal time to start taking more risks. Once the enemy fleet has lost some of its spotting and long-range firepower, Francesco Ferruccio can move closer and make better use of her SAP and torpedoes. Use the gaps created by destroyed ships to attack enemy cruisers and battleships from unexpected angles rather than approaching directly through the center of the enemy formation.
Kiting is particularly effective when an enemy flank pushes into your position. Turn away before the enemy gets close, maintain enough distance to make their return fire difficult and continue delivering SAP salvos while retreating. Exhaust Smoke can then be used when you need to disappear during the withdrawal or cross an exposed area to reach a safer position.
The ship's Repair Party is important because Francesco Ferruccio's armor does not provide much protection when she is caught in concentrated fire. Avoid waiting until the ship is almost destroyed before using the heal. Recovering damage earlier can allow you to remain active on a flank and preserve the hit points needed for an aggressive late-game push.
In the late game, Francesco Ferruccio becomes much more flexible. Fewer enemy ships means fewer guns capable of punishing her, while the long-range main battery and low detectability make it easier to isolate targets. This is also when her Exhaust Smoke becomes especially useful for making aggressive moves against damaged or isolated opponents.
The biggest mistake with Francesco Ferruccio is treating her as a conventional high-DPM light cruiser. Her guns are accurate and her SAP hits hard, but the reload limits sustained damage output. The ship performs best when every engagement is deliberately chosen: find the right target, deliver accurate salvos, avoid unnecessary exposure and use smoke when the tactical situation requires it.
Overall, Francesco Ferruccio is a long-range Italian cruiser built around accurate SAP fire, concealment and Exhaust Smoke. She rewards captains who understand when to attack and when to disappear. Maintain distance early, punish exposed targets with SAP, support friendly destroyers, and use smoke and mobility to survive the moments when the enemy finally turns its attention toward you.
This build and strategy also applies to Optio, which shares Francesco Ferruccio's core gameplay concept and can be approached with the same captain and upgrade philosophy.
