Ferrante Gonzaga is a Tier IX Italian premium cruiser with an unusual combination of rapid-firing 135 mm guns, SAP and HE ammunition, 10 km torpedoes, Exhaust Smoke Generator and Engine Boost. The ship's relatively small HP pool and weak armor make her fragile when caught under concentrated fire, but excellent speed and concealment give her the tools needed to choose when and where to fight.
The main battery consists of twelve 135 mm guns arranged in four triple turrets. The guns reload in 7.7 seconds and have 2.05 sigma, giving Ferrante Gonzaga a steady stream of accurate fire despite the relatively small caliber. Her main battery range is only 13.8 km, however, so positioning and concealment are particularly important when deciding how aggressively to play.
SAP is the defining ammunition type. The shells deal up to 3,050 damage and have 38 mm of penetration, making them particularly effective against destroyers, cruisers and vulnerable sections of larger ships when the target provides an appropriate angle. The improved ricochet behavior of SAP rewards careful aiming rather than simply firing at the center of any target.
HE remains useful when SAP is unable to produce reliable damage or when setting fires becomes more valuable. The 135 mm HE shells have 23 mm of penetration and a 9% base fire chance. This gives Ferrante Gonzaga a useful alternative when fighting targets whose armor or angle makes SAP inefficient.
The twelve-gun battery gives the ship a very different feel from the larger-caliber Italian cruisers. Ferrante Gonzaga does not rely on enormous individual salvoes. Instead, she generates damage through frequent salvos, good dispersion and constant target selection. This makes the ship more dependent on staying alive and maintaining firing opportunities throughout the battle.
That requirement is especially important because the ship's survivability is one of her weaknesses. The current Wiki lists a small HP pool and weak armor among Ferrante Gonzaga's main disadvantages. The best defense is therefore not absorbing damage, but avoiding situations where several enemy ships can comfortably shoot at you.
Concealment is one of Ferrante Gonzaga's strongest characteristics. Her surface detectability is approximately 11 km, giving her a useful ability to disappear between engagements. Combined with Exhaust Smoke and Engine Boost, this allows the ship to create short attack windows and then relocate before the enemy can concentrate fire.
Exhaust Smoke is particularly useful because it allows Ferrante Gonzaga to remain concealed while moving. Instead of stopping behind a conventional smoke screen, you can continue sailing, change position or withdraw while maintaining concealment. The ship's smoke deployment lasts 40 seconds, providing a substantial window for repositioning.
Engine Boost complements the smoke perfectly. Ferrante Gonzaga can reach 35 knots normally, while Engine Boost raises her speed by approximately 20%. The result is a cruiser that can change flanks quickly, close distance for a torpedo attack or escape from an engagement before the enemy establishes a comfortable firing solution.
The ship's torpedoes are another important part of her identity. Ferrante Gonzaga carries six 533 mm torpedoes with 10 km range and 72-knot speed, making them unusually fast for a cruiser and useful for both offensive attacks and area denial.
The torpedoes work particularly well with concealment. You can approach a large target without revealing your position too early, launch a spread and then use Exhaust Smoke or Engine Boost to disengage. The objective is not necessarily to force a point-blank attack; threatening a battleship from concealment can be enough to make it alter its course and lose an advantageous position.
The recommended build should therefore concentrate on the characteristics that make the ship effective: reload, concealment, survivability and consumable uptime. Ferrante Gonzaga already has strong mobility, so the captain and upgrade setup should complement that mobility rather than turn the ship into a stationary gun platform.
A typical engagement begins with Ferrante Gonzaga approaching under concealment. Once a suitable target is identified, SAP can be used to begin dealing direct damage. If the target's armor or angle becomes unfavorable, switch to HE rather than continuing to fire ineffective SAP. The rapid reload allows you to adapt your ammunition without losing too much firing tempo.
Destroyers are excellent SAP targets because the shells can deal substantial damage to them when they are exposed. The twelve-gun broadside also gives Ferrante Gonzaga a useful ability to punish a destroyer that remains visible for several seconds. However, the relatively fragile hull means you should avoid chasing enemy DDs into areas covered by multiple cruisers and battleships.
Cruisers are often the most rewarding targets. SAP can generate heavy damage when the target gives you the appropriate angle, while HE provides a fallback when the cruiser becomes heavily angled. Use concealment to approach from an unexpected direction and look for opportunities to attack a cruiser already engaged with one of your allies.
Against battleships, target selection is more important. SAP should be directed toward sections where its 38 mm penetration provides reliable damage, while HE can be used when fires or better penetration opportunities are available. The low individual shell damage means the ship is usually better at creating sustained pressure than delivering a single decisive salvo.
The main battery's 13.8 km range is one of the main constraints on the ship. Unlike a long-range Italian cruiser, Ferrante Gonzaga cannot comfortably remain at maximum distance from every threat. Instead, use concealment and speed to compensate. Move closer when the target is distracted, then disengage as soon as the tactical situation becomes unfavorable.
This creates a highly mobile engagement pattern. Ferrante Gonzaga should not necessarily remain in the same firing position for several minutes. Fire, evaluate the enemy response and relocate when necessary. Her 35-knot top speed and Engine Boost make this style particularly effective.
Smoke is especially valuable when the ship has already attracted attention. Because Ferrante Gonzaga can continue moving inside her Exhaust Smoke, use it to cross exposed areas or create separation from enemy ships. Avoid sailing predictably in a straight line, however, because an experienced opponent can estimate your position inside the smoke and blindfire the area.
The low smoke firing penalty is another useful characteristic. Ferrante Gonzaga's firing detection penalty in smoke is only around 4.9 km, allowing her to remain relatively close to the enemy while firing from concealment. This does not make smoke immunity absolute, but it greatly expands the number of situations in which the consumable can be used offensively.
During the opening minutes, avoid being the first cruiser exposed on a flank. Use your concealment to identify enemy positions and look for opportunities to support friendly destroyers. A few accurate SAP salvos against an enemy DD can have a much larger tactical impact than several minutes of farming a battleship from an exposed position.
Once the initial destroyer positions are established, look for distracted cruisers and battleships. Ferrante Gonzaga is particularly effective when attacking a target that is already occupied with another friendly ship. You can approach more aggressively, deal damage and then use smoke or Engine Boost to break contact when the enemy finally turns toward you.
The combination of concealment and torpedoes makes island approaches particularly dangerous for enemy ships. A battleship hiding behind an island may suddenly find Ferrante Gonzaga within torpedo range without having had much warning. The cruiser can then launch torpedoes and retreat before the target has enough time to establish an accurate firing solution.
Do not force these attacks, however. Ferrante Gonzaga's low HP pool means that failed close-range engagements can be extremely expensive. The ship is much stronger when the enemy is isolated, distracted or already damaged. Avoid attempting to ambush a healthy ship that has multiple supporting vessels nearby.
Mid-game is where Ferrante Gonzaga's speed becomes particularly valuable. Once one flank begins to collapse, use Engine Boost to rotate toward another area rather than slowly following the main fleet. Her ability to change position quickly can create entirely new firing opportunities against ships that were previously protected by their positioning.
This mobility also helps compensate for the relatively short gun range. Instead of trying to reach every target with a range upgrade, Ferrante Gonzaga can often simply reposition until the desired target enters effective range. This is generally safer and more productive because the ship's concealment and smoke are designed to facilitate movement.
The main battery should remain active whenever the tactical situation permits. Four triple turrets provide a steady stream of SAP and HE shells, and maintaining that pressure helps prevent enemy ships from comfortably occupying important positions. However, do not sacrifice your concealment or HP simply to maintain firing uptime.
A good Ferrante Gonzaga engagement often ends before the enemy ship is destroyed. Deal meaningful damage, force the enemy to react and then disappear. If the target survives but has been pushed away from an objective or forced to change course, you have already achieved a useful tactical result.
Against enemy cruisers, use SAP aggressively when their angle allows it. The 38 mm penetration and 70-degree ricochet threshold give the shells a broad range of viable targets. When SAP stops producing reliable results, switch to HE rather than continuing to trade ineffective salvos.
Against destroyers, aim carefully and prioritize targets that are already visible to your team. Ferrante Gonzaga's 135 mm SAP can deal meaningful damage, but the ship does not have the concealment or survivability of a dedicated destroyer. Avoid allowing a destroyer engagement to pull you into a position where enemy cruisers can punish the cruiser.
Against battleships, use the combination of guns and torpedoes to control movement. HE can provide consistent damage from range, while torpedoes create danger when the battleship attempts to push. The threat of torpedoes can often force a battleship to turn, giving Ferrante Gonzaga a better angle for subsequent gunfire.
The ship's torpedo speed is particularly useful because the 72-knot weapons give targets less time to react. This makes them effective against predictable ships and narrow channels, but good prediction is still required. Do not simply launch at the target's current position; think about where the enemy will be when the torpedoes arrive.
Smoke and torpedoes can also be combined defensively. If an enemy pushes into your position, launch torpedoes toward the most likely approach routes and then use Exhaust Smoke to disengage. This can force the pursuer to maneuver while you disappear and reposition.
Repair Party is another important part of Ferrante Gonzaga's survivability. The current ship data lists three Repair Party charges, so preserving HP early gives the cruiser considerably more freedom later in the battle. Do not treat the heal as permission to take unnecessary fights; use it to recover damage from unavoidable engagements and remain active.
One of the biggest advantages of Ferrante Gonzaga is how quickly she can shift from offense to defense. If the enemy begins focusing the cruiser, Engine Boost and Exhaust Smoke provide two complementary ways to escape. Use speed when you need distance and smoke when breaking spotting is the priority.
The current community data also shows that Ferrante Gonzaga has a very tight turning circle of approximately 600 meters. Combined with her 35-knot speed, this makes her capable of sharp changes in direction despite the relatively long rudder shift.
This maneuverability is particularly helpful during open-water farming. Vary your speed and rudder position whenever enemy battleships are aiming at you. Do not rely on distance alone; make your movement unpredictable and use Engine Boost during the most dangerous moments.
In the late game, Ferrante Gonzaga becomes increasingly dangerous because the enemy usually has fewer ships capable of punishing her aggressive movements. Isolated cruisers can be approached under concealment, while damaged battleships become excellent targets for both SAP and torpedoes.
At this stage, Exhaust Smoke can be used more offensively. With fewer enemy ships available to crossfire the cruiser, you can approach closer, launch torpedoes and use SAP at short range before disappearing again. The key is still to avoid becoming surrounded.
The biggest mistake with Ferrante Gonzaga is playing her like a conventional Italian cruiser that simply sits at range and farms. Her 13.8 km main-battery range is not designed for that kind of passive gameplay. Her real advantage is the combination of mobility, concealment, Smoke and torpedoes that allows her to choose the engagement.
Another mistake is overcommitting to close range because the ship has good torpedoes. The torpedo armament is an important tool, but the fragile hull means failed pushes are punished heavily. Approach isolated targets, use Smoke to control exposure and disengage when the enemy has too much support.
Overall, Ferrante Gonzaga is a highly mobile Italian Tier IX cruiser built around rapid-firing SAP and HE guns, fast 10 km torpedoes, strong concealment, Exhaust Smoke and Engine Boost. Her small HP pool and weak armor make careless engagements dangerous, but her speed and consumable package allow her to control when those engagements happen.
The ideal Ferrante Gonzaga captain should think of the ship as a mobile ambusher rather than a traditional damage farmer. Use concealment to approach, SAP to punish vulnerable targets, HE when SAP becomes ineffective and torpedoes to control enemy movement. Use Exhaust Smoke and Engine Boost to disengage before the enemy can turn the fight against you.
Ferrante Gonzaga rewards players who are constantly moving and looking for the next opportunity. Her guns provide reliable pressure, her torpedoes punish predictable pushes and her consumables let her disappear from fights before her fragile hull is overwhelmed. The combination makes her particularly effective on flanks where speed and concealment can be used to attack the enemy from unexpected angles.
