Captain & Ship Build and Strategy Guide
- Build focus: Main battery firepower
- Playstyle: Long-range sniper battleship
- Main strength: Extremely fast shells and high AP penetration
- Build trade-off: More offensive power at the cost of survivability
- Advanced option: Trade Enhanced Repair Expert for Furious to maximize firepower even further
- Ideal range: 15 km+
- Main weakness: Poor durability and slow reload make close-range fights dangerous
- Key principle: Use range and positioning to keep opponents from exploiting Taihang's weak survivability
- Applies to: Taihang
Taihang is a Tier IX Pan-Asian battleship designed around long-range gunnery. Her extremely fast shells and high AP penetration make her particularly effective when attacking targets from distance, where her excellent ballistics can be used without exposing her relatively poor durability.
This is the standard firepower-focused Taihang build. Rather than investing heavily into survivability, the setup increases the ship's offensive potential so that she can make the most of her strongest characteristic: putting high-penetration shells onto targets at long range. The current WoWS Builds guide describes the build as a specialized setup that gains firepower at the expense of survivability.
The ship is most comfortable at roughly 15 km and beyond. At these ranges, her fast shells make it easier to lead moving targets while her high AP penetration gives successful hits considerable damage potential. Taihang should therefore be played primarily as a sniper rather than a battleship that wants to trade damage at close range.
The drawback is that the build leaves even less room for mistakes. Taihang already has relatively poor durability and a slow reload, so allowing cruisers or battleships to close the distance can quickly turn a favorable engagement into a losing one. Range and positioning are therefore part of the build's survivability.
Keep a close eye on the minimap and begin repositioning before an enemy flank collapses toward you. Taihang is much more effective when she can maintain distance than when she is forced to escape from a close-range engagement that has already started.
Because the build prioritizes firepower, target selection becomes even more important. Look for broadside cruisers and battleships during turns, then use the fast shells and strong AP penetration to punish them. With a long reload, each salvo should be aimed carefully rather than fired simply because a target is available.
Experienced players can push the offensive setup even further by replacing Enhanced Repair Expert with Furious. This provides additional firepower while sacrificing still more survivability, making the variant better suited to captains who are confident they can consistently avoid taking unnecessary damage.
The key to Taihang is understanding that distance is your armor. Stay far enough away that enemy ships struggle to punish you, keep relocating when the battle develops and use your excellent shell characteristics to maintain pressure. The more consistently you control the range, the more value this firepower-focused build provides.
