Bayard is a Tier VIII French premium light cruiser built around sustained main battery firepower and exceptional mobility. Her twelve 152 mm guns have a 7.5-second base reload, 16.44 km firing range and 2.0 sigma, giving her a very strong platform for consistent damage output. The ship's major weakness is her fragile protection, as Bayard does not have access to a Repair Party and can lose large amounts of HP when caught in the wrong position.
The recommended captain build focuses on keeping Bayard active throughout the battle rather than trying to turn her into a stationary island cruiser. Consumable Specialist and Consumables Enhancements improve the availability and duration of the ship's important consumables, while Adrenaline Rush increases reload speed as Bayard loses HP. This combination works particularly well on a cruiser whose effectiveness depends on maintaining a high rate of fire.
The build takes Last Stand as an early one-point investment. Bayard's mobility is one of her greatest defensive tools, so losing the engine or steering during a firefight can be particularly dangerous. Priority Target is also valuable because it tells you when the number of enemies aiming at the ship is increasing, giving you an early warning to change speed, direction or position.
Concealment Expert is an important part of the build because Bayard needs the ability to disengage after firing or reposition without constantly being exposed. Her armor is poor, so concealment is not simply an offensive statistic—it directly increases the number of situations in which you can choose when to fight.
Heavy HE and SAP Shells is particularly attractive on Bayard because her twelve 152 mm guns already provide a high volume of HE shells. The skill increases main battery HE damage by 10%, although it also increases detectability for ships with guns of 149 mm or larger. The additional damage fits Bayard's farming role, while the concealment penalty reinforces the need to maintain distance and avoid unnecessary exposure.
Demolition Expert complements the HE-focused setup by increasing the fire chance of the main battery. Bayard's high shell volume means that even a small increase in individual fire chance can translate into additional fires over the course of a battle. Use HE as the default ammunition when attacking angled targets, battleships and other targets where AP penetration is unreliable.
Bayard's AP should not be ignored. Her 152 mm AP shells deal up to 3,300 damage and have a short 0.025-second fuse, making them useful against exposed cruiser broadsides and other lightly protected targets. Switch ammunition when an enemy cruiser gives you a clean broadside rather than automatically firing HE at everything.
The Main Battery Reload Booster is Bayard's most important offensive consumable. It reduces the main battery reload dramatically for 15 seconds, allowing the ship to create short periods of extremely high shell output. The best time to activate it is when several salvos can be fired into a valuable target—especially a broadside cruiser, an exposed destroyer or a battleship already suffering from fires.
Avoid using the Reload Booster simply because it is available. Bayard's normal reload is already strong, so the booster has considerably more value when used during a temporary window of opportunity. A target trapped in open water, a destroyer spotted by an ally or a cruiser turning broadside can provide much more value than activating the consumable against an angled battleship.
Engine Boost is equally important because Bayard is designed to use speed as part of her survivability. The Enhanced Engine Boost allows her to reposition quickly, change flanks and make open-water dodging more effective. Engine Boost Modification 1 is therefore the preferred upgrade for players who want to maximize the ship's mobility and consumable uptime.
Open-water kiting is one of Bayard's strongest tactical options. Rather than sitting stationary behind an island, maintain enough distance from battleships that their return fire can be dodged. Change speed and rudder position unpredictably while continuing to fire, and use Engine Boost when you need to increase the distance or make an incoming salvo miss.
Bayard's mobility also makes her effective at changing firing angles during a battle. If one flank becomes too dangerous, use Engine Boost to disengage and relocate before the enemy can collapse on your position. This flexibility is one of the main reasons to prioritize mobility-oriented upgrades instead of building the ship exclusively around static firing positions.
Hydroacoustic Search is generally the preferred choice over Defensive AA Fire because it provides more practical utility in Random Battles. Hydro can help detect torpedoes and ships around islands and becomes particularly useful when Bayard has to operate closer to objectives or when an enemy destroyer attempts to use island cover.
The recommended upgrade setup complements the same philosophy. Main Armaments Modification 1 protects the main battery, Engine Boost Modification 1 extends the usefulness of Bayard's mobility consumable, and Aiming Systems Modification 1 provides a balanced improvement to the ship's weapon systems. Steering Gears Modification 1 helps the open-water kiting playstyle, while Concealment System Modification 1 improves disengagement and positioning flexibility.
Bayard should generally avoid becoming the first ship exposed on a flank. Her lack of Repair Party means that damage taken early cannot simply be recovered later. Let tougher allies absorb the initial pressure, then use Bayard's range and mobility to punish targets while remaining difficult to hit.
Against destroyers, the large number of 152 mm guns gives Bayard considerable burst potential when the target is spotted. However, do not chase destroyers into unfavorable positions. Your speed and maneuverability are excellent for a cruiser, but Bayard is still vulnerable to concentrated fire. Use Hydroacoustic Search when appropriate and rely on allied spotting when possible.
Against cruisers, ammunition selection becomes increasingly important. HE is the reliable choice against angled or heavily armored targets, while AP should be loaded when a cruiser exposes enough broadside for the shells to penetrate effectively. The Main Battery Reload Booster is particularly dangerous against a cruiser caught during a turn because several rapid salvos can severely punish the mistake.
Against battleships, Bayard is primarily a sustained HE damage dealer. Keep moving, maintain a comfortable distance and target areas that can reliably be penetrated. When a battleship becomes focused on another target, this is often the best opportunity to activate the Reload Booster and generate a large amount of damage before returning to a safer firing pattern.
The biggest limitation of Bayard is that her firepower can tempt players into staying exposed for too long. The ship's DPM is excellent, but that does not make trading HP for damage efficient. Fire continuously when the situation is safe, but disengage whenever enemy attention becomes overwhelming. Bayard becomes much more effective when she survives long enough to use her consumables repeatedly.
Overall, this build turns Bayard into a fast, high-DPM French light cruiser that relies on damage output, consumable management and active maneuvering rather than armor. Her twelve 152 mm guns, Engine Boost and Main Battery Reload Booster give her exceptional damage potential, while Concealment Expert, Steering Gears Modification 1 and careful positioning help compensate for the lack of a Repair Party.
