World of Warships Early Game Guide
Matches in World of Warships snowball quickly. Winning the early game isn't about rushing at cap, it's about evaluating ship capabilities, assessing the loading screen and knew who are the potential threats to you based on the ship list.
In WoWs, many players load in, press the W key to hit full speed, and blindly head toward the nearest cap point. But before they even spot an enemy ship, they find themselves caught in a broadside crossfire, radar-spotted, and are sent straight back to the port.
The truth is, that the battle begins on the loading screen of the battle. The first few minutes of the battle are crucial
1. Know Your Ship's capabilities
You can only control your own ship, so you must clearly understand its parameters—not just vaguely, but accurately:
- Concealment: How close can you get before you are spotted?
- Survivability: Are you a tanky battleship or a glass-cannon cruiser?
- Mobility: How fast can you accelerate and turn away if caught in a bad spot?
- Utility: Do you bring Radar, Smoke, or Hydroacoustic Search?
2. Read the Lobby During the Loading Screen
Press and hold the TAB key the moment the loading screen appears. Do not wait for the countdown to hit zero. Look for these crucial parameters:
- Vision Control: Which destroyers (DDs) have the stealth advantage? Is there a Aircraft Carrier (CV) or Submarine that will force early spots?
- Radar Threats: Which enemy ships (DDs, CAs, BBs) are carry radar? Note whether they have 10 km or 12 km radar ranges.
- Map positioning: Look at where you spawned relative to islands and cap points. Identify which flanks have strong support and which are weak.
3. Assume the Worst Until Proven Otherwise
At the start of the match, every enemy ship is undetected and heading toward predictable positions. Until information is verified, treat unspotted threats as immediate dangers:
- Assume an unspotted radar cruiser (e.g., Minotaur, Des Moines, Petropavlovsk) is equipped with radar and heading straight to your flank.
- Assume enemy Battleships (BBs) are pre-aimed at common transit channels.
- Never commit to a broadside turn in open water early on, assuming the enemy won't shoot.
4. Vision Control > Capture Points
A frequent beginner mistake is rushing directly inside a capture zone (cap) at the start of the game. Capturing is your reward for winning the flank—it is not the initial objective.
For Destroyers and Light Cruisers, providing team vision is your highest priority. Spotting allows your heavy-hitting Battleships and Heavy Cruisers (CAs) to deal damage safely, which forces enemies back and opens up the capture points naturally.
5. Radar Threats
Do not head bow-in straight toward the center (0°). Instead, approach at a 15° to 40° angle relative to the enemy team, pointing your stern toward the corner of the map.
Slowly edge into their radar range. If they activate radar or shoot, you are already turned away and angled. You can immediately accelerate and kite into safety while your team focuses fire on the revealed cruiser.
Summary Checklist for Your Next Battle
- 1 Hold TAB on the loading screen and list enemy radar ships and their range.
- 2 Plan an escape route before approaching any cap or island.
- 3 Approach contested zones already angled away for a quick exit.
- 4 Win the vision game first; cap the point second.
